Biyombo stock, possible draft strategy

Post#1 » by erudite23 » Sun Jun 12, 2011 11:52 pm

Given that Biyombo's stock is now starting to stabilize at the bottom end of the lottery after his amazing rise up draftboards everywhere, the Jazz might have an opportunity to switch gears here. We need a young big to groom as the eventual partner to Derrick Favors. Favors has the potential to be an excellent two way player. At this point, though, he's more of a defensive force than he is offensively. So a guy like Kanter and his offensive ability are more intriguing as a long term fit next to the young promising big man. But there's also a chance that he (Favors) could develop into a potent offensive force, in which case it would better serve us to get a rebounding/shotblocking center to pair with him in our frontcourt.

The ideal scenario would be if Biyombo was available @ 12, in which case you take Knight at 3 and get your developmental big guy with the second pick. Also, Jonan Valanciunas is having trouble getting a settlement with his team and, if he stays in the draft, he could have an outside shot of being there @12 as well. Either he or Biyombo would be excellent value that late, and give us the latitude to take our future PG with 3.

After evaluating all these guys under a microscope for weeks, it seemed more appealing to get the potentially dominant big guy with the 1st pick and then find a wing defender with our second. But if one of the high upside Euro guys is available, I'm starting to lean more towards getting Knight high and then taking one of them as a guy to develop for the future.

What does everyone think?

Call it a gut feeling if you want, Passing on Kanter will be a huge mistake.

+1, man. I can't shake it, either. But the thought of getting nothing out of this pick....*shiver*

I'd be thrilled with Knight and Biyombo.

Draft both Kanter and Biyombo if those are the guys you want.

I'd rather have Valanciunas than Biyombo. Still think the Jazz might plan on taking Motiejunas at 12, knowing they can have Knight at 3.

Oh, and I also have to disagree with erudite when he said Biyombo's settling back into the middle of drafts. I know Ford and DX moved him up, but they both overreacted a ton to the hoops summit game. It's kind of funny considering Givony sees nothing of proof in Kanter's out put at the hoops game, but Biyombo's performance took him from the mid/late teens to top 3 on their prospect board.

Biyombo is going top 10.

I don't understand the strategy behind his individual workout. In order to display the kind of value he brings to a team, he would need to workout with some other prospects. Shot blocking, athleticism, defense, hustle...for his first few years in the league he'll be an elite garbage man, if there is such a thing- shooting jump shots over some husky workout coach isn't going to help his stock.

I don't think it hurt him either, though.

I think taking Kanter at 3 is by far the better option. Aside from Irving, none of the PG prospects strike me as players who will achieve better than top 7-10 at their position during their careers. Conversely, Kanter looks to have the potential to develop into a top 5 center or PF, particularly if he plays next to a dominant front-court defender, as Favors will likely become. If they both eventually possess strong offensive arsenals, so much the better.

At twelve, I like many of the prospects who may be available. Singleton is a player I could see playing a vital role for a contending team. Even Jimmer is growing on me of late. Bottom line: the separation between Kanter and Valanciunus or Biyombo is much more apparent that the separation between Knight and Singleton, Burks or Fredette.

I like the idea of drafting Biyombo at #12, and taking Knight early, but I would only do it if we trade Kanter or Williams to get the Cavs, or Washington to give us a load in return. If it is the Cavs, we should get this years #4, their second rounder that we could flip for cash and a future first, and next years #1 either unprotected or with limited protection.

If it were Washington I would want their #6, #18, #35 and next years unprotected or with limited protection. With #18 we could take Jordan Hamilton if he is still available or a player that nets us future picks and assets. For example if Chicago has a crush on Marshon Brooks they might be willing to give up their Charlotte held pick and one of this years firsts, that we could flip for cash and a future first.

If the Jazz believe that Knight is the BPA, they need to leverage Kanter and or Williams value to other teams to get him. But until then they need to send every signal that Williams or Kanter is their guy.

If the Jazz trade down with Williams still on the board, this fan base damn well better stage a bloodless coup.

Yeah, if for some reason Williams is there you take him and don't look back, but if (as I suspect) the Jazz like Knight more than Kanter, they'll hopefully find a way to leverage Kanter's perceived value.

Biyombo had a rough workout according to most people in attendance. Apparently this has prompted the Biyombo camp to contact a few teams in the U.S.

Frankly I don't know why people were surprised. We knew he was a bad foul shooter and doesn't have a jump shot. That workout wouldn't have made him look good at all. I think he would need to go 3 on 3 to show more. I think he is really raw, but if he were there at #12 (which is doubtful) I can see the Jazz taking him.

Looks like he wants to workout for the Pistons and the Knicks.

According to Chad Ford's Twitter:

Bismack Backlash: In wake of shaky Euro workout, Biyombo now offering to work out for few teams in the US - Pistons & Knicks both got calls

KFAN was reporting that Bismack went one-on-none and lost. Meaning he missed about 80% of his shots.

I'd rather go Kanter or Jonas.

I don't think that's the choice here. No one here is suggesting taking Biyombo at 3, are they? Kanter and Valanciunas are both likely to go in the top 6. Biyombo's range seems to be 6-17, though I'd be surprised if he's there at 12.

Biyombo's workouts mean little.

He's a defensive powerhouse that scores off rebounds and dunks.

Anyone reading his interviews will understand why Giovany says Biyombo is one of only two players in the draft that has the potential to become an all-star.

Not what I meant. If the Jazz go big I'd rather they do it at 3 than 12.
