Recommended RealGM changes

Post#1 » by Wont PerDont » Mon Jul 25, 2011 7:12 pm

I was responding to the "How did you find out about RealGM?" thread when I thought of an idea I thought I would share with the rest of you.

One of the things that kept me from becoming as "die hard" of a poster as I initially became was some issues I had with the site that made it less than user-friendly to me. I thought that others might have had similar issues and might like to share. I don't remember seeing a thread of this nature, so I thought I would start one.

I am not sure how the site creators/maintainers feel or respond to issues that users have, but even if no changes are made I thought that maybe others have found good work around solutions to issues that many have and it might be beneficial for all to share.

So, let's hear what issues (or biggest complaints) you have regarding navigating (or site setup) the boards on RealGM. I'll start with my own. Maybe others are similarly frustrated, or, perhaps, I am overlooking an easy fix that I would greatly appreciate one of my RealGm "family members" straightening me out:

I would LOVE for there to be a way to determine where your last post in a thread was located. What I mean is, let's say there is a hot/active topic and my initial post is located on page 12. Now, the next time I come back to it, the thread has advanced to page 45 and I don't know where I left off reading. I would prefer not to have to look through all of the pages of the thread in its entirety in order to find my inital post or the place that I last left off reading others posts. It would be so much more user friendly if there was something cueing me to the fact that I left off on page "X". I hope that makes sense. And if I have just been overlooking an easy solution to this problem, I hope that someone will assist me.

OK, now it's your turn. Either post your solution to my issue or the best workaround you have come up with (in lieu of a proper solution), or post your biggest pet peave about the site. Maybe there is something you have noticed that works well on another site and you would like to see it incorporated here. Again, I apologize if this has been done in the past, but hope this can be a constructive tool for us hardcore RealGM addicts. :D

I always thought it would be cool if there was little dialogue box on the main forum page that showed the last 3 (or so) posts in any thread. That way, you could see what posters were saying in response to certain topics, and if they sparked your interest, you would have an easier time responding to the post.

Despite my low post count and/or my recent join date, I've actually been coming to this site since sportstalk.com was bought by ESPN. Most of the changes over the last decade have been really positive and it's been fun watching this site grow into what it is today.

My only suggesed change is the trade checker. Previous versions use to tell you how much a player would make that year, but now it only lists how much is owed on the remaining contract. A very minor detail, but one that's always bothered me. Thank God for Tommy Udo 6 and his Bulls Salary Thread.

Speaking of the trade checker, does anyone remember when Realgm was the only site that had one? Now that ESPN and others have copied it, it doesn't get the love that it use to. I remember when the trade checker was first launched, it was one of the cooler features to be found on any basketball website though.

Unfortunately, Sam Smith still hasn't figured out how to use it...

What about an advanced stats calculator.

My pet peeve is that threads over 90 days should be archived and in read only mode. If the moderators have a policy against upping any thread that is over 90 days old then why allow the thread to be posted to? Most forums wouldn't have an issue with such a thing, but apparently here it a colossal no-no to up an old thread. So if we're not allowed to rekindle subjects just because a few months passed by without comment on that subject, archive the thread. Simple.
After Rose broke both his knees, I gave up on the hope that we'd make it to the NBA Finals again. It will probably be decades before we see another championship. Hello Treadmill, here we come.

Trade Checker: one thing i like about Espn Trade machine is that it shows how much the player is making this current year. is there any way to add that to trade checker?

i'll chime in...

1) when you put your mouse over the thread title, you should see a few words of the beginning of the post, most basic forums have this feature.

2)my posts function should allow you to go to your "my post", which is related to #3...

3)search feature... (jesus christ why don't we have one) many great posts and great threads disappear and are doomed to be repeated because we can't dig up a thread from 2 months ago that covered something in great detail.

and yes, i know you can bookmark a good thread, which is an acceptable work around, but it would be better if we could just "search", how hard is that ?????
