Eddy Curry drops another 28 pounds..

Post#1 » by We-Are-Lasers » Sun Aug 14, 2011 4:23 pm

Eddy Curry is getting closer to receiving serious attention from the Heat.

Tim Grover said last week that since Curry’s workout with Miami in late June, he has lost another 28 pounds and is now at 300. Curry weighed 350 when he auditioned for Miami in March.

Curry intrigues Pat Riley, who might offer him a minimum deal following the lockout if he loses another 12 pounds or so.

His skills “are there, no question,” Grover said.

Per wiretap.

Anyways this could be good for us if he can drop another 25 pounds by november. Heck even a 10-13 ppg with 5 rebounds would be better than Joel at this point

I don't understand the fascination with Eddy Curry. He has no defensive instincts.

We need someone who can score down low, Joel can't. Curry can. I realize he might be a defensive liability but unless Samuel takes MLE (if it exists) we are screwed at center.

If any team has a shot at teaching Curry ANY defensive skill, I'm guessing the Heat's staff and Riley is up there with 'most probable chances at succeeding in turning Curry into a respectable athlete" in the league.

Everyone deserves a second chance. If he truly wants to be committed and revive his career, then miami is the place to do it. You cant teach instinct, but you can improve as a defender.
****, I remember when everybody said MJ was a slouch on defense. He put his mind to it and won DPOY after that. BEFORE YOU START FLAMING ME, I am in no way saying Eddy Curry has a fraction of the prowess and hunger and talent that MJ did, but the point is if you put your mind to it you can achieve it. Let Zo and our staff have a crack at him, teach him some defense. At the very least, he's twice the player that Dampier was, and that's better than nothing. By the time the Finals rolled around, Spoelstra had a lineup that consisted of no backup centers. **** we had Joel starting at C and Bosh backing him up. Anyone with a body and some sort of offensive ability will help at this point.

And if we do get an MLE then he'll ride pine to a ring. Is that so bad?

If he continues to lose weight there's no doubt we should give him a chance IMO. Bring him into training camp and see how he does against Joel, Big-Z (Why did we resign him again?), Pittman, etc.

I don't care if his defense isn't that good, there's little chance he starts for us. He can give us 'easy' and 'efficient' offense off the bench.

Curry will never be a very good help defender but he is a pretty good 1 on 1 post defender. He has pluses and minuses but in his last season as a Bull Chicago managed to lead the NBA in defense. Curry led that team in scoring and played the 2nd most minutes on that team. I think he can give you guys a much needed dimension on offense. I think your teams defensive quickness will cover up a lot of his weaknesses like the Bulls did. I think if you guys had a healthy , in shape and motivated Curry you would have beat the Mavs. That is a lot of ifs but I hope things work out for Curry.
My eyes glaze over when reading alternative stat (not advanced stat) narratives that go many paragraphs long. If you can not make your point in 2 paragraphs it may not be a great point. :D

Very good point. We really just lacked a big body down there who can match up with somebody like Chandler and be a post weapon on the other end. Unless Spoelstra plans on letting him hedge on screens the way Joel does, he could be a useful asset defensively as well.
Also, if he's losing all this weight in such a short amount of time, he truly displays how much he wants to make a team. I doubt turning him into a respectable defender should become that much of a challenge then.

Eh, it'd be nice to have a scorer at the 5 we can bring in for spot minutes. Not like we have a plethora of young, able centers for our 5 depth.

It would be great to have a guy that the defense has to respect on the roll to the basket. Like everyone on this board, my expectations of Curry panning out is very low.

Go Heat!!!

sure it'd be nice to add a big body with offensive skills, but my hope really is that while Curry is losing weight - Joel is working on his O game!!! Is Hakeem still available? LOL

I don't think even Hakeem can help improve Joel's offensive skills dramatically.

Two words: Isaac Austin

Sign this man up if he's willing to put in the work. Just one more dimension to the team.

I don't care what happens to Curry as long as we don't jettison Dexter Pittman.

Gotta agree. At least he's showing effort. If he can drop some more pounds it shows his commitment to change. Who knows how long it will last but it's worth giving him a look. Shaq worked got himself in shape when he got here then slipped back to his old LA habits. It could very well be the same with Curry if he signs a contract.

That's the guy I think we can surprise people with.
Put Zo and McAdoo on him and this guy will give us 10-10 a night EASY. That's all we need from a C. Nothing else. With Joel we get 0-12...I'll take 2 less rebounds if it means we have 10 extra points on the board.

I exactly how many games did Joel Anthony get 12 rebounds last season? Or the season before that? Or before that?

More like 0 and 5.
