Update: Doughty Signed 8 Years 56 Million

It appears that any future offer from the Los Angeles Kings to restricted free agent Drew Doughty will take into account any time missed.

Kings general manager Dean Lombardi said that, because players now get paid for training camp as part of the latest Collective Bargaining Agreement, the number of days Doughty holds out must be factored in to the team's contract offer. Based on the $6.8 million per year offer the Kings have made, that means a reduction of almost $25,000 for each day he is absent from camp.

"The problem we have, and we're going to have to see how this evolves, is that generally with a player, you establish his market value and he signs up for 275 days of work," Lombardi told LA Kings Insider. "That was the one thing that changed during the CBA, that players were paid during training camp. So, quite frankly, it's the way we have to approach this. Let alone missing a day or work, as well as getting behind your teammates in terms of preparation. It probably makes this a little more difficult, but you have to factor that in now. You're not getting a full year's work as of today."

I can't say I disagree with Lombardi on this but its a pretty ballsy move and chances are its probably not going to work for him.

Thoughts?

Not the most intelligent thing in the world to do. You don't negotiate with a top 5-10 defensemen by telling him you'll deduct $25,000 a day off his contract if he doesn't sign. If I'm Doughty, I'm requesting a trade elsewhere, to see how that scare affects Lombardi's stance. Contract negotiations aren't always resolved quickly, but you're not going to get Doughty to budge by offering him 6.8 million one day, and 6 million a few weeks from now.

Doughty and his agent made a huge mistake by turning down that 6.8M offer. That is a boatload of money, and whatever offer he would get in the FA market would be about the same annually because teams would tack on minimal salaried seasons to bring down the cap hit.

I am not sure what to make of this. $6.8 million is a lot in the NHL. Sure it's not the type of money say a healthy Ilya K, Crosby or Ovechkin are getting but it's no slap in the face. Tyler Myers got paid but he's a stud I mean a 6'8" busing defenseman while being a good offensive threat to boot.

I think Drew should use Tyler Myers deal as a measuring stick and see what he could get based around that.

I've heard that it's the term that is in disagreement, not the money. However, I still think he'd get in the area of 7.5 million in the open market as a free agent.

He wants big money and shorter term to get his UFA years, and the Kings want a long term deal. Drew's being a huge dick about it, to be honest.

About what? That he, like any other player, wants to get paid fair value?

Doughty signing for 8 years, $56M. Wow. Good for the Kings on getting a long term.
