Why it will happen: Dwight wants to play in LA and win win win and develop an even bigger brand for himself.
Why it wont: Lakers have a lot of guys locked up for big bucks, orlando may not find it feasible to trade with them or will they...

I think chances of him coming to Lakers is very slim, Otis will not want to repeat the incident that the Magic franchise faced over a decade ago. Morever, I don't see why we have to get Dwight? Why can't Lakers aim to get a better PG and SF as it's more of a realistic option? I honestly think we can just re-tool and have a legit shot at the title.

I'm not saying we can't get him, because as July 8th 2010 has shown, anything is possible. But it would take a third and possibly a fourth team to pull such a feat. And good luck finding trade partners who are willing to help us destroy for yet another decade.

I'm being honest with you here. Every players WANT AND WISH TO BE a Lakers. It's a matter of how many roster spot we have and how much we can pay them. If the money is good, they come here regardless of what players we surround them with. The only few players who turn us down over the years are KG, C-Web that I can think of.

Rule: Extend-and-trades (think Carmelo Anthony to New York) are permitted, but at a price. Maximum length of the extension drops to three years, with raises of 4.5%. A team signing a player to a deal longer than the extend-and-trade permits can't trade him for six months, and a team acquiring a player in a trade can't give a contract extension larger than the E-and-T rules permit for six months.

Impact: Good news in the short term, tougher in the future. For the next two seasons, sign-and-trade deals remain available to the Lakers, leaving open an avenue to bolster the current roster and also plan for the future. In year 3, however, the tool disappears from the tool box. While not necessarily used extensively, in conjunction with other restrictions it becomes a bigger deal.

It also puts a clock on theoretical deals for Dwight Howard, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, or a different star. The Lakers (or any other team) would need a six-month cushion from the date of the swap before pen could meet paper on a contract extension. The goal, though, is to limit the ability of richies like L.A. to continue stacking superstars. All told, combined with the tax rules, assembling a powerhouse squad becomes more difficult, and keeping one together even harder. With the Lakers, superior management has in large part been responsible for the former, and deep pockets the latter.

In those years the Lakers drop out of the tax, though, the new rules will afford some new flexibility. Salaries on trades need only match within 150% rather than 125%, and the matching period on restricted free agents drops from seven days to three, for example. Shorter contract lengths will make it easier for teams to move players, build a roster, and undo mistakes.

The only option would have Dwight force himself to directly say he wants LA and only will extend a contract in a trade with LA via sign-and-trade (similar to Carmelo's situation.) And from this article, it looks like trade transaction that involves matching salaries within 150% are easier to do with this new CBA. So if LA wants to take on a bad deal like Turks, Lakers would have to figure out how to take on a bad salary as incentive to the Magic to pull the trigger.
Issue to is that LA may not have enough assets to pull this deal if the Magic don't want Bynum as the center piece of LA's offer.

In my opinion, its all unlikely if Orlando holds a grudge with the Shaq trade. But history could repeat itself too.

A better option for Orlando is find out exactly what Dwight wants before the trade deadline. If Dwight is still unsure, it's Orlando's gamble. If Dwight tells them honestly, he wants to go some where else, Orlando will do the T'wolves-KG scenerio and ask Dwight which teams he would like to go to. Orlando ships Dwight out with a bad contract, amnesties one like Arenas or Turk, gets draft picks for 2012 draft (deep draft), players back to rebuild the franchise (young talent is ideal), and will have a great likelihood to survive yet another mega-star trade.
I think Orlando has to learn from the Shaq trade that I in my opinion... killed their franchise for years plus the injury to Penny. Orlando was able to get back in the Finals and become relevant when they drafted Dwight Howard. This will give them new life with this coming draft so I think high draft picks are key to any Dwight Howard trade.

The new cba IMO was designed with our beloved Lakers in mind. The other 28 gm's in the league were looking for a way to stop the Lakers reign. This is why there's bidding for amnestied players, and why teams over the tax can only spend 3mil of the MLE. They are all tired of seeing us compete for a title. With that in mind why would any of them trade is Howard,Williams or Paul? Or even help facilitate a trade that would land us any of them? They just won't and it sucks but it is what it is.

More realistic option is wait it out til these contracts expire and see what's out there then. If I'm wrong I'm wrong but I for one won't get my hopes up

Another way to look at the new CBA is that since the Tax is still at the previous Dollar:Dollar rate for the next 2 years before it gets pro-rated based on Millions over cap, teams might want to pull the trigger on deals ASAP and sign new players to heavily front-loaded extensions...

To me, the new CBA doesn't really seem to change a whole lot... I think the restrictions will been seen as a lot of hype when looked back on in a few years.
