Simmons on Indy

Post#1 » by granger05 » Tue Dec 6, 2011 11:38 pm

Bill Simmons is writing a series of articles leading up to the NBA season. Today he was writing about the various free agent centers and what he expects them to get paid. The Pacers came up a few times.

Greg Oden: By all accounts, a good person and someone who's legitimately tortured about letting the Blazers and their fans down. Looks like he's accepting their one-year qualifying offer for $8.9 million. Still … if I'm Indiana, I'm offering the hometown kid a three-year deal for $33 million that goes backwards ($12 million, $11 million, $10 million) with Year 3 kicking in only if Oden plays 65 games or more in Year 2. If anyone needs a change of scenery, it's Greg Oden.

Josh McRoberts: That's right, the same Josh McRoberts who was nearly dealt to Memphis with a no. 1 pick for O.J. Mayo at the trade deadline, only they didn't announce the trade in time (one of the most underrated NBA boners of recent years). He's not a true center (more of a power forward who can masquerade as a center on a non-contender, ala David Lee), but his numbers (22.2 MPG, 7.4 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 0.8 BPG, 2.1 APG, 54.7% FG and 73.9% FT) weren't bad last season. You know what that means? Ladies and gentleman, I present to you our most likely winner of the Amir Johnson Award for this year's "Wait, He Signed For WHAT????????" guy. Someone will give him the full mid-level or the financial equivalent. It's coming. A quick PS: Johnson exceeded everyone's expectations in Toronto last season, so be careful about making too much fun of Roberts for $25 million (or whatever it ends up being).

Later he offers some predictions on where players end up and has none of these guys ending up with Indy except...

12. Aaron Gray
Prediction: Signs with Indiana (three years, $15 million)
Verdict: OVERPAID

I'm not sure why he thinks we would pay that much for Aaron Gray. This would fall under the category of "terrible offseason."

Yeah, those are some real head-scratchers.

Fair enough if he doesn't think the Pacers can land a top free agent like Nene etc. But giving Oden a multi-year contract at $11 million per is a desperation move, for a team that lacks a true center. Um, the Pacers don't lack a true center, and they aren't desperate. The "but he's from Indiana!" argument didn't fly with Steve Alford, and I don't think it flies with Oden either.

And $5 million a year for Aaron Gray to back up Hibbert? Why?

I guess Simmons has convinced himself that Hibbert sucks and the Pacers need to shore up the center position. He needs to try actually watching the Pacers play this season. Granted, that's not easy to do outside of Indiana.

Bill Simmonds is a comedian, not a sports guy. No serious sports fans should ever take him seriously.

I mean, $33 million over 3 years for Greg Oden who hasn't played hoops in like 2 whole years? C'mon man.

Let's keep this thread going with even more ridiculous Bill Simmons Indiana-related things (I love the guy, great writer, sometimes has very good basketball insight, but these ones.... he's just cranking out words here)

http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/7323610/the-third-day-nba-christmas

A column in which Bill Simmons attempts to claim that Arron Afflalo should get $50 million over 4 years. He does somewhat couch this in a "I don't know if he deserves it, but I think he'll get it!" way - given the dearth of solid young 2 guards, given Denver's high likelihood of matching any offer, etc. But he's also like, "Wow, Afflalo is great, look at his numbers, 2-way player" (this is all correct btw) "so really, 12 million a year is a good price!"

I mean, this is the guy who whines endlessly about the bad contracts given out in the nba, then suggests with a pretty straight face that giving Arron Afflalo 50 million for 4 years is a good deal.

He also predicts where they'll go, and predicts Afflalo to go to Indy.

What.

Seriously, if we give Arron Afflalo a $50 million contract I'm going to be so flabbergasted and disappointed.

We need to just target small-contract moneyball guys, or big-time difference makers. We do not need to give a difference-maker contract to a moneyball guy like Afflalo. It's absurd.

the chances the pacers even bother to give afflalo an offer sheet, let alone something anywhere near that are pretty much none.

agreed.

He also predicts where they'll go, and predicts Afflalo to go to Indy.

I think we've already overpaid a Denver shooting guard.

Bird is not that stupid!

I'd like to see the Pacers get Oden but not for $12 million per unless he comes back and has a great season this yr. I"d really like to see McBob come back but not for $6-7 million per year.

And Oden's out for the year, it now looks. Suffered another setback, and apparently re-structured his contract (instead of signing the qualifying offer, he's now signing a smaller dollar amount for one year as a favor to Portland).
