Burks

Burks is having a good camp so far. It looks like sometime over the next couple of years the Jazz will have the SG they've been needing.

Of course camp is completely different from regular season games. Under Corbin, Burks may see more playing time than I originally expected, but that remains to be seen. He may average 20 min a game, if he can do the same things in game situations as he's doing in camp. If Sloan were still here I doubt Burks would see as much playing time. Sloan really hated rookie mistakes, and didn't want to gamble on them.

Until he has a dozen or more games behind him, it's hard to tell where he'll fit in the rotation. Burks like all rookies is going to be mistake prone, especially on defense which isn't a strong skill for him anyway. The frequency and type of mistakes play a major roll in dictating playing time. If a guy can score 10 for the team, but cost 15, he's not going to see a lot of court time.

Burks seems to have progressed in the off season which is to his credit. That's a good sign for any rookie coming into camp.

There will be a lot of RGM posters jumping on the Burks band wagon and predicting he's the second coming. Burks will play some, score a bit and be a nice addition to the Jazz. He's not going to take the Jazz to finals, so enjoy his play but don't fall over the cliff with exuberance.

There are many questions this season, Burks is just one of them.

You're not alone. I think we have what we need at C/PF between Al, Millsap, Favors, and Okur. Through in Kanter and I'm confident we have a great frontcourt for the foreseeable future. Now our swingmen were nothing too write home about, especially with AK not too likely to stick around. Hayward alone is not enough at the SF/SG spots, though he is on his way to become a very good swingman. Burks looks great in his highlights and he has bulked up this summer as well. A long summer seems like a good thing for rookies, as it gives them more time to get into shape before hitting the floor. I really look forward to seeing this kid in action.

Burks is going to be a good player, but it's going to take time.

The Pro game is so different from college. All the guys at the Pro level are bigger, stronger and faster than the ones Burks was playing against. The speed of the game is different. The offensive sets and how open shots are created is different, and the demands of defense are different. In college a guy might have to play one or two other strong guys in his position on opposing teams in a season. So if his defense wasn't all that great, it wasn't a real big problem in 80% or 90% of his college games. In the Pros a player is looking at guys every night that are good. And in the Pros defense is difficult 90% of the time.

In the long run, if Kanter reaches his potential he's going to be an important player for the Jazz. Right now the 4 key guys and the future of the Jazz will be Kanter, Favors, Hayward and Burks. If those 4 guys can learn to play together as effectively as I think they can, the Jazz are going to be a competitive playoff team for many years to come. Right now Jefferson, Millsap and CJ have to produce while the young guys learn to win consistently.

The speed on the perimeter is so much faster at this level than in college I think he'll struggle not being able to beat everyone he faces off the dribble.

I see him taking a similar path to Hayward. Slow start, will get a chance but will struggle at times, but will figure it out by seasons end and will look promising going forward.

Nah, Kanter and Favors are the main attraction for this season. Those are the two most naturally gifted players on the team, and are by far our biggest hopes for contention. The chances of Hayward becoming All Star caliber are tiny. Burks wasn't even fit for a top 10 selection in a very weak draft. Having seen him at the charity game a few weeks back, I'm a little higher on him than I had been, but too many holes to get too excited about.

Kanter and Favors. Those will be our meal tickets. If we end up eating at all.

I agree that Kanter and Favors have natural physical tools. Both of them can be excellent. It depends on their attitudes and aptitudes.

Burks is better than you're giving him credit for. He was on my top 3 Jazz pick list all year long last year. I was surprised he was available. He didn't go in the top 10 because of his style of play and that fit issue. Not only was he a good choice as an athlete, he also fits the Jazz, which makes the pick even better.

As far as Hayward, you're way off the mark. Hayward sets very high expectations of himself, knows what's required to reach those goals and works his butt off to get there. That was part of the reason KOC liked him so much. One of Hayward's goals is to be an all-star. Hayward will crawl across broken glass to reach a goal he has set for himself. He's similar to Stockton in how he goes about reaching his goals. He doesn't talk much, he stays within himself and he maintains his humility. I wouldn't short change Hayward. He's going to surprise a lot of people.

I'm probably more excited for Burks than Kanter simply because I think the opportunity for Burks to see serious time is obviously present. My guess is Kanter is behind Jefferson, Favors, Millsap, and Okur, so finding time might be far more of a struggle for him.

I also think Burks being older will give him a step up, and obviously he's played more minutes against better competition than Kanter has.

I'm just excited for the season to get underway, two weeks from tomorrow is opening night, a week from tonight is our first preseason game. Can't believe camp is already nearing an end.

I'm not more excited but definitely more intrigued because i dont know what to expected, with Kanter after eurobasket things are easier, we know what he is capable of doing, Burks is, at least for me, big ? he can be a steal a top 5 player of this draft or he can end like Cj, so as a guy who have problem with fell his shoes.

well yes, and thats why i like so much when we gets seniors through draft because you can predict right away guys future in NBA, Burks needs time, mistakes happens to all rookies even best ones but even after few games we would know what type of player he is or can be.

I'll be surprised if Burks turns into anything meaningful, even a half decent role player. Then again, I've been wrong once before... I think.

Dismiss Hayward at your own peril. He has the tools and the drive to be a very special player, and barring catastrophic injury, he will be.
