Player Predictions: Pape Sy (Update Cut)

Post#1 » by Superiorblogman » Wed Dec 14, 2011 4:08 pm

What do you expect from Pape? What is a acceptable contribution from Pape?

First off, I do not understand the Pape Sy project at all. I don't understand how it came about. How a guy just comes in works out only for you and you fall in love with him and give him a 3 year deal, even though not guaranteed as a developmental player. I just feel there were so many bigger projects out there that could have fit a more pressing need and don't see the tools that he wowed them with in that workout. Also, I am still not understanding Larry Drew being stuck on Sy being a PG. I can remember during pre-season last year when Jordan was looking like he could be a rotation player sooner than later. Drew was asked about Jordan whom he had playing some PG. Drew kept dismissing playing Jordan at PG some as a way to give him minutes but he is stuck on Pape whom I have seen nothing from as a PG.

All that said, Pape does have speed even though I am not sure he has the coordination to change directions. I have seen him get the ball and push fast but he seems to have problems changing directions with the ball. Like a running back that can only run over people, but can't avoid anyone. I think Pape will start the season as the 4th guard behind Teague, Joe,and T-Mac and will have some games where he plays 8-12 minutes a game early in the season. Really don't expect much in production from him though, just think he will be given every chance to succeed.

He is simply more experienced as a point and could certainly bring some D with his size, length and relative speed at that position.

I've always liked him and wanted us to draft him in the second round. My expectations are still low, and it's difficult to predict right now, because I need to see him play in our system.

Word out of camp is that he has been the most impressive along with Teague and Marvin but I don't think much of camp reports or the preseason. Preseason and camp says Teague should have been a rotation player his rookie year and Jordan should have gotten serious looks his rookie campaign before being traded.

He had a nice alley-oop dunk at the scrimmage but showed nothing else. Wannamaker looks like a better option, but all of this camp and pre-season stuff means little

Sy is a keeper for now. The alley was nice, but that's not exactly what I care about, so the other aspects of the game that he can possibly grow into is what intrigues me about him. His length and being able to play multiple positions is a big plus, but he needs to be effective, and turnover free.

Still don't get the love affair the FO has with this guy. He had 1 good play in preseason gm 1 but it was nullified by about 4 or 5 missed shots and a couple of bad turnovers.
