Not a bad deal. I could see NOH being interested since the deal saves $7M in '13-14 without changing their salary structure too much between now and then. Unfortunately, I could also see them shopping Okafor around more to shed more salary next season though. If they haven't received anything better by the deadline though, it would make sense for both sides.

I can see them wanting a sweetner for Okafor. He is still a center in a league where centers are a highly prized commodity.

Nice trade, it would benefit both teams and would give us the Center we've needed for a while now.

With a little change with picks exchange

ATL sends Zaza, Marvin, Rolle + 12 1st for Okafor and NO 2nd
ATL signs Al Thornton to the min.

JT - Kirk- Sloan
JJ- T Mac- Stack
Smoothe- Thorton (min) - T Mac
Horford- Radmanovic- Garcia
Okafor- Collins- Benson

ATL moves up by dealing 3 2nd picks to get a late mid to late 1st

If we did have to give up a first it has to be the 2013 pick, the Hawks can't give away our 2012 for 2 reasons, number one: we've already given away our first rounder the last 2 years (jordan Crawford and our 2011 pick both to the Wizards for Hinrich) and aren't allowed to give up another first; and number 2: this will be the best draft class since 2003 with Dwayne Wade and Lebron and everyone; we can by no means give away a first in 2012. And because this is a strong class I don't think 3 second rounders will even get us a first in this class; if you want to move up give our 2012 first (which will be mid to late) and our 2 seconds to get one of the earlier picks.

Then same deal with NO 2nd 13 and ATL 1st 13.
3rd reason to your argument: NO does not have a 2nd 12 at the moment... :(

Wrong on reason n°1, only reason n°2 could be right.

ATL can trade his 2012 first round pick. The rule doesn't allow to trade two future first round picks, that's all.
2011' pick is not a future pick, and we don't have traded our 2013, so we can trade the 2012 pick.

There is no simple move involving New Orleans. I actually wouldn't do this deal at the start of the season. I'd wait to see how Marvin plays with the surgically repaired back before dealing him for Okafor's contract. Given the savings and potential of landing a pick I think Okafor would be available until the trade deadline.

Another reason I'm hesitant ist that Okafor is due almost 14.7M in 2013-2014. In that same year Al will make 12M and Joe 21.5M. The 2 year transition in the CBA will be over meaning that the cap will be determined by the 51% (or whatever exact number it is) of BRI (could be higher, could be a lot lower). And most importantly the 2 players I feel have the best team marketing possibilities, Josh Smith and Jeff Teague, will be free agents. What I'm saying is that I'd have to be completely sure that he's the missing piece and a substantial upgrade over what was being surrendered in trade before I risk losing Josh and Jeff as collateral damage of the move. I know it sounds gutless but I just think there are too many unknowns to make this deal now. I'd like that partial season of data to decide if it's the right move.

As for Al Thornton, I like him for what he is but I think he's still holding out for more than the minimum because a couple of teams have unsettled rosters. If you can get him for the minimum then great. He's not much on anything but scoring, but he could add punch to the 2nd unit.
Going to donkey punch a leprechaun!
