Is Jose Bautista the best bang for the buck?

Other then players still on their rookie deals, could you not say that the deal we gave Jose last year was a complete bargain at only 5ys and 65 Mil. Even with him having one spectacular season on his contract year you have to believe that if he were a free agent last year he probably would of gotten a contract that was similar to Jason Werth. With the contracts that were thrown out this winter ie.

Michael Cuddyer - 3yrs/31.5M
Jason Kubel- 2yrs/14M
Aramis Ramirez- 3rs/36M
Jose Reyes- 6yrs/106M
Jimmy Rollins- 3yrs/38M
AP - 10yrs/254M
Josh Willingham- 3yrs/21M

If you break dwn Jose's deal its 13M a season. Seeing guys like Cuddyer, ramirez, Rollins, and Reyes sign for at around that number per year or greater just tells you how smart AA was to lock Joey last season and not let him hit free agency. Even if Joey were to have had a sub par season i still believe he would of gotten a contract around Ramirez as he is still a multi-dimensional player that can play 3rd and the outfield and steal the odd base.

What do you guys think?

Reason for creating this thread was i was tired of the AA bashing. We all now AA likes to keep his cards to his chest so there is no point of getting over-hyped with every name you here that is linked to the Jay otherwise we would have signed Heath Bell, Yu Darvish, Carlos Beltran, etc.. AA has a game plan and i for one would like to see it run the course and give him a few years to put his blueprint on the field and then judge him.

It's remarkable how many Jays fans have a chartered accountant mentality. Managing finances has become a sport unto itself.

Funny thing is I am a staff accountant at BDO and just found out I passed the UFE exam this past month, and all I got to do it finish my required hours and I will have my C.A. designation.

Starting with his last arbitration year for an accurate comparison, Longoria is on a 4 year $36M contract. This starts in 2013. He'll make $4.5M next year. Only $13M is guaranteed from this point on.

It's lucky we saved all that money on Bautista, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to get all these free agents!!!

Bautista, Romero, Morrow, Rasmus, Escobar, Johnson... in fact most of our starting lineup is either in their prime or entering it right now. This would be the time to spend.

Rogers has failed so far.

Well we are wasting the prime of the best hitter in baseball... Much like we wasted most of the prime of the best pitcher in baseball.

I understand why people can grow impatient but we can't let one player leverage us into handing out contracts that we can't afford. Unless we spend the exact same payroll as the Yankees, theoretically we can't compete. 120M can't beat 200M unless the 120M is wisely spent in value deals, where players live up to their contracts. People say "Oh the Jays said they can spend 120M. Fielder + Darvish + CJ Wilson = 120M lets get er done" which completely disregards every other player on the team. We would be stuck with declining Wilson and Fielder and Darvish would be at risk of never living up to the hype. We are then tied into not spending another penny when Lawrie goes ape in his prime, along with potentially D'Arnaud, Alvarez, Snider, Colby, Romero, etc.

AA has a dollar amount at which he will sign Fielder. The question is will a team be stupid enough to jump the gun and overpay in a 8-10 year deal. If they do we get to collectively laugh when Fielder post 2 WAR/season starting at age 32.

We spent to surround Halladay. Rios, Wells, B.J. Ryan were all supposed to be some kind of lame attempt to keep him here. All of them posted good numbers and were handed large extensions to preserve the "future". They all just fell off a cliff and we were cap locked and couldn't spend in FA for a long while. (aka until the Angels were stupid enough to take Wells)

I would sign Fielder for 4/100, 5/125 or whatever. I just wouldn't sign him 8/200 or 10/250 that hes asking. If his price comes down I can see AA signing him. For now, look forward to the 2012 draft with the 17th overall selection.
