Whiteside in the NBDL

Post#1 » by rpa » Sat Jan 7, 2012 8:15 am

Not sure how many people are paying attention to this but he's played in 3 games since being sent down about a week ago. So far he's averaging over 4 blocks and nearly 9 rebounds a game (just over 20 minutes per game). Stats can be found

here (last night's game): http://www.nba.com/dleague/games/201201 ... einfo.html
and here (has previous 2 games): http://www.nba.com/dleague/playerfile/hassan_whiteside/

Pros:
- Blocking lots of shots ( :droop: )
- High FG% (over 50%)
- Low fouls (about 2 per game)
- Good rebounding (especially on the offensive end)
Cons:
- Horrible FT shooting (4-15 -- that's not a typo)
- 0 assists
- Relatively high turnovers (2 per game) given that he doesn't score or assist much

He has 5 games between tonight and next Sunday, but if he plays well tonight and Monday I'd love to see him rejoin the team and get some minutes. With Hayes out 3-4 weeks we're looking at only having 3 "real" big men on the roster (Outlaw & Greene don't count) and 2 of them are foul prone. Having him at least gives the team an emergency big (and I think he should see 10 minutes a game while Hayes is gone).

The only thing I take from the D-League are the things he does bad (FT shooting and turnovers).

Blocks too(If he gets minutes in the NBA he's top 5 in blocks for sure, the man is a phenom in terms of blocking shots regardless of level of competition)

Hows Tyler doing?

Looking at the stats, Honeycutt brought over the poor-shooting syndrome Kings' small forwards have. He's logging 15-20mpg through 3 games, but has only mustered 3ppg on 20% FG.

With Hayes out I hope we get to see Whiteside play, I think he is what this team needs in terms of defense. As good as the chuckwagon is on defense although he hasn't been great so far imo, we need someone who can defend around the rim.

Whitesides block numbers always look sexy but his defensive awareness leaves much to be desired. He just loses focus so easily. That being said only way to get better is actual game experience, so hopefully after a stint in the Dleague he can stop blowing rotations and taking plays off.

FT shooting and assists? Who gives a ****, how well did Ben Wallace or Dikembe Mutumbo do in those categories.

First time poster here, i would actually like them to bring him up during the time chuck hayes is out, imo that would give a really good look at his play. And if he doesnt play to standards, just send him back down when chuck comes back.

This would be the most logical situation.

Not happening. Whiteside dominates the D-League when he first gets into the game, but he hasn't really played much at all since college so his conditioning needs to improve. He has been playing his ass off and showing passion though, and the minutes are doing wonders for his game. Free throw shooting will come, and he did a good job passing out of the post last night when LA actively tripled him. He's in Sac today for practice and will be back with Reno Monday, and stay until he's in game shape.

Though I would like to see Whiteside brought up he is not ready IMO . Yes he is a great shotblocker but his free throws are horrific . I do not expect his percentage to be great or even good . He is not even decent . He needs to work very hard on that . He would kill us at the line in games & that would be a huge factor in games in terms of wins vs. losses if he was to get even so much as 10 minutes a game .
If he was just playing garbage minutes 2 or 3 minutes at the end of a game were it had no deciding factor either way then it would be a different story IMO.

His free throw shooting is actually solid in practice, not great or anything but around 70-75%. He'll turn it around pretty quick and get back to at least 60% while he's in the D-League.

Smart said Whiteside has not been recalled from the DLeague. Maybe he is going to play small like he did in the previous game and at Golden State.

No disrespect look at the percentage he is shooting from the free throw line in the d-leauge alone it is horrific not even close to 70 % even .

And I'm saying he's a better free throw shooter than his percentage indicates. Now by no means an i saying he's a good free throw shooter right now, but his percentage will go up in his coming d-league games. He's really 1 correctable technical flaw away from being a good ft shooter.

I can agree with that mnWI . I still dont think he is ready yet . I would then he prefer to give him another week or 2 . This will give him more time to work on his overall game . He is in better position right now getting play experience in the d-leauge right now IMO . Him being brought up right now would not be best IMO .
I do think he should be brought up this season to give him a fair look though . I am sure the Kings knew when they drafted him he would be a work in project .

We need to develop players. Whiteside is better served playing heavy minutes in a less hostile environment solely to work on his game. Sure Whiteside would help on D right now, however is that small help worth interrupting Whiteside's development?

If you follow his twitter account he seems to be happy he is playing ball again. He posts his stats and has embraced playing in D league. Why screw that up?

I really hope to see him get a shot soon, any type of shot. From all indications he is hard worker, I just hope we can get a chance to see him play sooner or later.

I think he still needs more seasoning in the NBDL before he hit the NBA court imo. At most, he should be seeing limited minutes if we brought him back to the team.

From what I seen, he doesn't look good. But that can change if he works hard at it and it seems like he is doing it.

I remember he was the perfect compliment to Cousins when they were paired up in the summer league. He was blocking shots left and right. Saved Cousins' butt multiple of times haha
