OT: Sox deal Scutaro to Rockies for Mortenson

Post#1 » by dagger » Sat Jan 21, 2012 11:44 pm

The deal saves BoSox $6 million which they are likely to redirect to signing Roy Oswalt

http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/_/i ... ources-say

BoSox see Mortenson as a starter.

#RedSox RT/@TroyRenck: Mortensen started and relieved for Rockies. When sinker working, gets a lot of quick outs and broken bats

jcrasnick Jerry Crasnick
The Scutaro trade frees up some $$ for #RedSox to make an "aggressive bid'' for Roy Oswalt, said a baseball source

JIM BOWDENespn
RedSox PlayerDevelopment Dept say that Jose Iglesias is not ready for major leagues leaving Mike Aviles as only starting SS option rt now

jcrasnick Jerry Crasnick
If #RedSox wanted to free up $$ for a run at Oswalt, why have they already signed Padilla, Silva, Cook and Andrew Miller?

I'm not a big Scutaro fan, but he plays as a 9th guy in that lineup, if it's not Iglesias are they really going to role with Aviles? Frankly, I don't see the point downgraded like that at SS to take a maybe shot at SP. And how much did Scoots make anyway? IMO this better be about another move for a different SS (please don't be them getting Hanley back) or it makes no sense.

They can't seriously be going into a season with Mike Aviles as their SS, right? I don't get this.

Unless several players experience bounce-back years, the Sox might be in trouble. They have Ortiz, Youkilis and Matsuzaka coming off their bloated payrolls after next year, but Youk will likely re-sign for even more, and they'll either have to make a pretty expensive wager on David Ortiz's age 37 season or find a replacement.

Could be their third season outside the playoffs in a row, and one has to wonder whether John Henry is starting to feel the pinch, if just a little...Liverpool is currently sitting 7th in the EPL and don't exactly appear primed to get back into Champions League, which means that the club (and by extension, Henry) are likely to lose a decent chunk o' change over the next year.

Not really sure what the Sox are thinking here.

They could have kept Lowrie if they needed the salary relief.

They traded Lowrie at low value. Then dump Scutaro right after?

It wouldn't surprise me to see Ellsbury traded as well, if it is true that nobody in the clubhouse gets along with him.

They still haven't addressed RF either, and traded just Reddick to boot. Are they really going to head out there with Ryan Sweeney as their everyday RF? Or are they going to go all in with Ryan Kalish?

I like the sound of this post. I'm rather sick of the Red Sox and their dominance. It'll be pretty hard for the Jays to make the playoffs anytime soon if the Red Sox continue to be a creme de la creme franchise.

Yeah, not saying that the Red Sox are in for an imminent collapse, but I wouldn't be surprised if they quietly pared their payroll down to ~$140m over the next couple seasons, if both the Sox and LFC continue to underperform. The playoffs themselves aren't big income-generators, but it won't do their other revenue streams any favours.

Don't get this at all for the Sox. The only way this makes any sense is if the Sox are trying to dump salary because ownerships in trouble. There's no way Scutaro's 6 million dollar salary is whats holding them back from signing Oswalt or Ross. Oh well I guess they're going with Aviles and Punto at SS.

All I can think of, is they might be in some talks for a SS. They didnt really pick up some good talent to. Whatever, as a Jays fan im only happy that they're going in to the season with aviles.

It's obvious they have a need for another starter when you look at their rotation. Not sure why they dumped Lowrie, but they had to offset Scutaro's salary to make it work (if in fact this Oswalt deal comes into fruition). Even they have a budget. I'm guessing that they felt this salary dump was the only shot they'd get to deal him away for nothing.

I for one am happy he's out of the division. He always seemed to kill us.

Liverpool at 7th isn't a huge problem. They are missing Suarez and have some players under performing (Carroll is the obvious one).

Both LFC and Red Sox are clubs with a rich history. Even if they lose, they'll still sell out games. I don't think they'll suffer if these clubs continue to underperform. In fact, they'll just spend more to fix the on field issues.

"Liverpool has won more European titles than any other English club, with five European Cups, three UEFA Cups and three Super Cups."

However, simply making the group stage of Champions League is estimated to be good for an extra £15-20m, rising the deeper one gets into the tournament, plus knock-on benefits.
