OT: Peyton Manning to the Cardinals?

Post#1 » by ShawnBronald » Tue Mar 6, 2012 11:35 pm

With all the talk surrounding the Suns being about an aging point guard and former MVP and what to do with him, the Cardinals seem to be in a similar position, except on the other side. It's expected that tomorrow, the Indianapolis Colts will announce they are parting ways with Peyton Manning, thus making him a free agent. The Cardinals have been rumored to be a possible landing place for Manning. There are lots of concerns with Manning ranging from age and whether his body will hold up after missing an entire season due to injury.

It's obvious the Cards need an upgrade at QB, but do you turn to a 35 year old, possibly broken down, former MVP? The last time the Cards tried that, it turned out well (see: Kurt Warner). While Warner was great, Manning (when healthy) is in a different league. Personally, I think the Cards MUST roll the dice and take a chance. Hell, maybe they can contact the Suns medical staff for an assist.

I'm curious what Suns fans think about the Cardinals possibly signing Peyton Manning and whether they should do it or not?

They absolutely should do it. A chance to acquire all time great qb doesn`t happen every year. And Peyton-Fitz combo would be terrific.

With Cards much improved defence from last season this would garantee play offs, at least.

Obviously, offensive line also needs to be improved.

Needless to say, all this if Manning is healthy.

Yes, of course, but there will be plenty of suitors, and ones that are probably willing to spend more money. But I did read earlier, that if they can sign Manning, that they can opt out of paying Kolb (I think his bonus is due about a week later) then they have to go for him. I also know Fitz had dinner with him during SB week, so he has likely made a pitch.

Having said that, I'm not sure Manning would come to AZ. His brother wouldn't go to SD back in the day, and Manning may want what he deems a better football city. But I'd love to see it.

It will certainly be interesting (no matter where he goes) to see if he can transform a team into an immediate playoff team, because most of the potential suitors haven't made the playoffs in a while.

Miami might be his best option, but of course AZ has the best receiver. He would be hard pressed in Washington as tough as that division is, and you've got to wonder if he would want to really go head to head against his bro so much (not that he would fear him, but more in the respect that they can more easily both lead their teams to the playoffs if they are in different divisions.)

Good thing for Peyton will be that Arizona has a better running game and defense than Indy...bad thing for Peyton would be that the Cardinals offensive line BLOWS and Manning would be running for his life at such an old age.

If the Cardinals hadn't done the boneheaded thing of giving Kolb a big contract despite him showing that he sucks even in limited action with Philly, then Arizona would actually have been a favorite to land Peyton.

But now their competing against Washington/Miami etc.

I see Washington landing RG3, Miami landing Matt Flynn, Cleveland landing a QB in the first (Foles, Osweiler), and the Cardinals / Seahawks battling for Peyton Manning.

I hope we do everything possible to pick him up, one advantage is of course having Fitz, but also that we can pick up Reggie Wayne and slide him over as a true #2 or 1B depending on how you look at it. We also should hopefully be upgrading our O-Line thru the draft and free agency, we should also return a pretty decent running game.

However, the one disadvantage is having Kolb and maybe not being willing to let him go after giving up assets for him last year and a pretty large contract.

In my mind, the Cards are in a great position to land Manning. I hope we pull the trigger and go all out to get him.

Kolb's contract isn't a huge problem the media is making it out to be. If he gets cut before his bonus is due it saves us 40 mil over the next 5 years. His signing bonus still hits our cap but it shouldn't be an issue.

If the Cards land Peyton, Kolb will be cut NLT 16 Mar 12 thus saving the $7 mil roster bonus, but will end up in Cleveland (same West Coast offense that Philly plays - a reason he doesn't fit as well here with the Cards)

They have about a week to cut him, and I doubt Manning will have made a decision by then. I wish I knew how good Kolb looked in practice, etc in the offense. It is a little tough to judge him on his limited play last year since he didn't really have a training camp, but he sure didn't look to good, so I'd definitely consider cutting him anyway, and if the Cards couldn't get Manning, they could go after someone like Jason Campbell, who is likely better than Kolb anyway.

Sarver is so happy P Manning thing is going on in Arizona. Fans right now are more focused on that then ripping sarvers ass every second!

That said cardinals and suns going in different directions. Both have relatively new owners.(micheal bidwell is considered new cause his daddy was running the show before) Cardinals are spending money and looking to
Improve. While the suns look to save money and maybe improve. Hate to say it but cardinals have overtaken the suns as the states team! Largely due to Sarver! Sarver made his bed now he has to sleep in it.

Anyway P Manning, would be smart to come to az. Dome stadium(and it's new), zero humidity(good on the joints), soft media compared to others, private type state, Fitzgerald, whiz, push Warner out off the local media spotlight, etc.
With Denver, you get hmmm ummm skiing.
Miami you get lebron, hurricanes, and surfing. Just the thought of lebron being associated with him should turn him off!
I am such a lucky NBA fan. 8647 My favorite team went from the most greedy and racist owner to the most ego driven dumbass owner in all of sports fdt.

Only a fan of Arizona teams!

I don't know jack about salary cap and all that in NFL but I would like to see my 49ers pick him up. Watching Alex Smith choke against the Giants was agonizing.

Please school me regarding anything football since I'm a newcomer.

The last I heard is that Manning has narrowed options to Denver, Arizona and Miami.

I believe he`ll play for Cards next season.

Lesson one, 49ers suck.

It would be great for the Cardinals to pick him up and I think they are the clear front runners. I can't see why he would choose Denver over the Cardinals.

You mean that team that was leading the league in defense and one game away from the Superbowl last year? Try harder son. I'm stupid but not that stupid.
