Slightly OT Akron's favorite son?

Post#1 » by wiff » Sun Jun 3, 2012 12:10 am

Ok so I recently found out that the Black Keys are from Akron Ohio. The same place LeBron is from. So I was wondering who is Akron's favorite son(s)?

There are others that are more popular than LeBron and more well known than the Black Keys

Well it's not Lebron.

The national media and his marketing team might have convinced some goobers from other regions that it's Cleveland fans that were mad and that Akron fans are ok with it and that Akron is magically separated from Cleveland.

Columbus loves the Black Keys. I don't see Akron supporting them the same.

Who?

don't think anyone really cares about any of this.

You may not, but people bring it up often enough that I think the information should be accurate. But by all means, if it's not of interest to you, don't comment on it and the thread will die as it should.

Ripped from another thread. Was bored, had nothing better to do.

There are LeBron supporters in Akron, but I would say 95% of them hate him for what he did too. Despite what was widely reported, people from Akron love Cleveland and Cleveland sports. They all felt just as betrayed as the rest of North East Ohio.

Funny story:

LeBron has held a bikeathon in Akron every year since he came into the league. Each year it grew in popularity up to the last year that he was a Cavalier which had an absolutely huge turnout.

Everyone figured once he quit Cleveland that he wouldnt hold another Bikeathon, but sure enough he held one anyway. I have several friends who work for the Akron P.D. and they were telling me how LeBron's "team" was calling every single day demanding heightened police protection for LeBron since they were worried about some rabid fan coming and trying to get revenge. They made such a big fuss about it that finally the Akron P.D. agreed to basically have 2 armed guards on him at all times and had nearly half of the force scattered around the bike route to act as protection.

The day of the event comes and the police department is out in full force preparing for some huge blowup and for throngs of people. The funny thing is that the only people who showed up to LeBron's event were the 15 kids who were receiving free bikes and their families. There was no massive group of adoring fans and there was no massive group of evil-doers just waiting to take LeBron out. No one showed up. No one cared.

LBJ was pissed that the city that he felt he had put on the map didnt show up to worship him. He was even pissed that people didnt come out to jeer him. He was pissed that no one cared. This is the same guy who used to get mobbed just going to Applebee's 3 blocks from his house, now he couldnt even draw a crowd for an event that had been advertized for weeks if not months. I think that was the first day that LeBron really realized that he made a huge mistake and no longer was he the King of Akron that he had professed himself to be and despite what he might say in interviews, that really tore him up inside.

Oh and the guys on the Akron P.D. were beyond upset that they wasted their time protecting LeBron from a bunch of 3rd graders.

I don't consider any of these as Akronites. None of them went to school in Akron where as LeBron and the Black Keys went to St V's & Firestone High Schools.

Devo is from Cuyahoga Falls

Csonka is from Stow.

Curry was only born in Akron but didn't grow up there.

PS - I LOVE the Black Keys.

I doubt they were upset. Police officers love making $30+ per hour working side jobs like that.
