Phil Jackson Speaks on the Knicks

In an "HBO Real Sports" interview that premieres on Tuesday, Jackson tells correspondent Andrea Kremer that Dolan never called - and he was glad.

"I wasn't gonna take that job, that's for sure," said Jackson, who played with the Knicks from 1967 to 1978.

Jackson suggests he has given a good deal of thought to coaching the Knicks - "New York is special," he says - but he dismissed the possibility of returning to Madison Square Garden because the current team is "clumsy."

"What's clumsy mean?" Kremer asked.

"Well, they don't fit together well. (Amare) Stoudemire doesn't fit well with Carmelo. Stoudemire's a really good player. But he's gotta play in a certain system and a way.

"Carmelo has to be a better passer. And the ball can't stop every time it hits his hands," Jackson continued. "They need to have someone come in that can kinda blend that group together."

"But wouldn't you have been the perfect person to come in and blend all that talent together?" Kremer said. "You sort of have a good history of that."

"Yeah," Jackson agreed. "Well, it never happened."

Jackson is a phony and a media whore. I'd rather have Spo. Phil is just concerned about his winning percentage and potentially being exposed. Perhaps that's why he has never coached in the Olympics either? I have more respect for Larry Brown than Phil.

Look at the roster of the team he took over in 2005. Outside of Kobe, it was disgusting. If all he cared about was his winning percentage, no way he would've returned to the Lakers then.

True, but LA has a history of winning, and the ownership has always been committed to winning. Prime Kobe pretty much guarantees a .500 season on his own, so it really wasn't that risky of a decision.

Not really - The Lakers were coming off of a 34-win season under Rudy T and had just traded Caron Butler for Kwame Brown when Jackson took over.

How many games did Kobe miss due to injury that season though? They were 33-31 when Kobe played that season.

Point being with lakers getting LESS talented, it certainly wasn't risk free as suggested.
