Poss KOC PG Strategy/ Draft Pick

Post#1 » by blackham9258 » Sat Jun 23, 2012 5:34 am

I desperately want KOC to move up to pick up Lillard because we need a PG... but perhaps KOC is playing a longer game here:

He has a solid PG in Harris, and his contract expires after this season. Also after this season many of his competitors will have filled their PG needs this summer:

Portland and others will go after: Lillard, Marshall, Teague, Wroten or in FA: DWill, Dragic, George Hill, Billups, or Lowry via trade. Other teams will scoop up Nash, and Lin.

Could KOC be waiting for next year to offer a 4/$20M deal to Eric Maynor viewing that with a stable full of horses: Hayward, Burks, Favors, and Kanter it just might be that all the Jazz need is a real steady hand... and that is Eric Maynor. I think the finals very well could have been a completely different story had Maynor been there for the Thunder... If he is there next year he could make the difference for them... but there will be no way on heaven or earth that they will be able to match a contract for him in the offseason. It may also mean that his value will creep above the MLE...

With all that said I still think it is wise to go after a trade to get into this very deep draft and I still think Millsap is the best trade piece: I would go for a SF like Barnes or Gilchrist.

If nothing is done I will be disappointed because I don't want to waste a one year asset of either Jefferson or Paul when we can gain an asset for years to come... because we all know that one of them will be gone after next season.. . we should really be trying to get an asset now with them.

At the very least we should be trying to move into the teens with Houston or Dallas to pick up a piece.

20 million four years for Eric Maynor?

What?

No.

No.

Pick up Myck Kabongo in next season's draft or something.

It would be interesting to pay a guy 5M a year who we traded earlier because his rookie contract was too costly.

We're going to do something. I don't know what it is, but something is going to happen before the start of next season. Would I like to get a lottery pick in this years draft? I would love to do that. Especially if we can land Lillard, Rivers or one of the top wing players. Is that going to happen? Well, considering how high of a price teams are going to be demanding... probably not... but we have too many assets to just sit on our hands and do nothing before the start of next season.

Paying that much for Maynor though... terrible idea.

overpaying someone, never a good idea if he is'nt someone really special. There's some good FA, offer'em a fair contract, not more. Our pg aren't that bad at all. and i'd also explore the possibility to play burks more at the point

The Jazz traded Maynor because the final year of Matt Harpring's deal was too costly.

I personally think that Maynor will prove next year to be worthy of that contract and perhaps more. If he doesn't he is still a very solid PG to lead a team that will be dominated by very good ball handling wings and great bigs.

Also, someone mentioned why we would pay more to a player who we got rid of a few years ago when on his rookie scale: The reason why was we were over the cap and they took on the $6.5M Harpring expiring... thus saving the Jazz $13M... the price was a very good young PG... Maynor.

Actually, if you buy into David Locke's stats Devin Harris is actually an above par PG, by a far amount actually. Locke's numbers say that Harris is our most efficient offensive weapon. I don't see it, but Locke followers might have something to hang their hats on their. As far as Maynor goes, big time injury recently and I'd be awfully hesitant to see how that progresses before offering him such a lucrative contract. I'd rather wait another year and find a young PG in the draft or FA, cuz we aren't competing next year anyhow, at least not on a championship scale.

Devin Harris is much too maligned in these parts, but that's for another day, I suppose.

Eric Maynor is the quintessential backup point guard. I'd love to have him back. But 5 million per year? That's just too much for him.

Would you go back to a team that traded you for money? They basically said, we as an organization do not think you will be all-star material. Recruiting still has some elements of opportunity along with money/team success. You'd have to grossly over pay someone in that position.

Harris goes unloved because he's a different kind of PG for the Jazz. We've been spoiled with great PG's over the past few years, with only a few dark years between Stockton/Williams.

On top of us not being used to a PG like Harris, he hasn't been playing to his strengths for most of his time here. It was about halfway through this last season that Harris started playing like Harris.

In the end, I don't like Harris as a long-term player, but he's more than serviceable for another season or two.

Just read a report that the Jazz are in talks with the Rockets to move up to the #16 spot (amongst other teams).

Not high enough IMO. That's the no man's land of this draft IMO. Needs to be a top 10 pick for it to really be worth it to us.

I don't see a reason to give Maynor - a player who was a backup his entire career, torn his ACL and missed the entire last season, the biggest and longest contract of his career so far, and a starting job.
Draft Nate Wolters - FAILED
Keep Nate Wolters - FAILED

Royce White might be there, Lamb could drop, Terrence Ross will be available, Kendall Marshall will be there; 16 is a nice position to be in.

I think Lamb and Marshall will be gone for sure. Marshall might drop, but I can't imagine Lamb would. It'd be somewhat of a reach to take White that high. Ross would make the most sense, but is he worth what we'd have to give up? Probably going to cost us Sap or AJ. Just doesn't seem like a good value trade for that spot in the draft...

It can't be player for pick straight up so it's hard to say what the cost is. Jazz would be taking back players too.
