Jefferson for Matthews
Since Portland is losing out on Hibbert, and they want a center badly why not a simple trade of Jefferson for Matthews which allows Portland to evlauate Jefferson as their future center. Jazz get an outside shooter they need.
Jazz lineup
PG Williams Watson Tinsley Burks
SG Hayward Matthews Burks Murphy
C Favors Kanter
PF Millsap Favors Evans
SF WIlliams Hayward Carroll
Fire Corbin and Hire Hornacek before Orlando hires Hornacek.

Because Portland would probably rather keep Mathews at 7 million than Jefferson at 15.

Why? Why do we want to pay that much money to a back-up? Aho's going to score in the post for us?
Bad, bad, idea........

You say that as if scoring in the post is a required trait of a good team. Of the four teams who played in the conference finals this last year, how many of them had legitimate post scoring threats? And how much of their offense came from the post?

The Jazz would swap Mathews for Jefferson in a heart beat. Why do you assume he would be a backup? More likely that he would be our starting SG than a back up. He's better than Marvin and Burks. People gripe about Burks playing time, but he is absolutely not ready to start.
It's pointless though, Portland doesn't have enough money in contracts to make it work. Unless they're was a sign and trade, and I doubt the Jazz want to commit to two long contracts.

Yes, but those teams had Lebron, Wade, Durant, Westbrook, Duncan, Parker, Ginobili, Garnett, Pierce......
We do not have an elite wing player like James or Durant or Pierce....... We do not have an elite defender in the paint like a Duncan or a Garnett....... We do not have an elite backcourt player like a Wade or a Ginobili or Parker or Westbrook......
Like it or not, Jefferson is more important to us than Matthews would be.......

I would assume he would be a backup because I don't think he would start over Hayward....... And we're not going to be paying Marvin more than $7 mil to sit on the bench....... That defeats the purpose of trading for him.......

I think it's more accurate to ask "who will score?" rather than qualify it by saying "..in the post." I think that's a valid question, and any discussion of an Al Jefferson trade needs to address how the Jazz will make up his scoring.
Basically my point is that there's nothing magical about where that scoring happens. There's nothing about the way this team is constructed that requires the scoring to be on the block.

Re: Jefferson for Matthews
You are correct in that respect....... I just don't think there's anyone who's going to make up the 19 points that Jefferson provides....... Matthews is not a very efficient scorer, only 41% from the field, I just don't think he's worth the contract that Portland gave him......

I can't imagine the Jazz without a low post presence.

I'd do it. Portland probably wouldn't.

It's funny, I think toledo is a troll. He comes in here, makes ridiculous trade threads (do we really need another SG???), and then just sits back and watches everyone flame each other. Brilliant.

Re: Jefferson for Matthews
Hmmm, everybody gripes that the young guys need floor time, everybody bitches that either Sap, or big Al gotta go. HT makes an intriguing trade idea and everybody hates it
Make up your damn minds,
It seems to me that Porty would need to send more than Mathews to make the trade work, but it is interesting.
I see it as
Mo, Tinsley, Watson
Mathews, Burks
Marvin, Hayward
Milsap, Marvin/???
Favors, Kanter

Re: Jefferson for Matthews
I liked Matthews while he was here as much as everyone.
But lets move on. SG is not a needed position right now.
Regards.

The way to make up the scoring is to give the possessions to people who score more efficiently. How about this - run a freaking offensive set instead of toss it into AL for a 50/50 shot and 10 seconds of rest for everyone else. It's not rocket science, the team is a team of finishers. Scoring is a complete non-issue, with or without Al, and advanced stats not only back this up, they scream improvement the second Al is removed from the team.

Not to mention this trade is impossible to do because Big Al makes bank next season
If jazz trade Al they will likely have to take on a worse contract. So I don't think they will.

Re: Jefferson for Matthews
As a Blazer fan I would do this trade. We have the cap space to make it work too. I would offer either Matthews or Batum in a S&T. I prefer Milsap over Jefferson but I would still be happy with Jefferson.

Re: Jefferson for Matthews
as i mentioned in similar threads, Wes is a nice player, not more. There's plenty of decent sg in the nba, and he doesn't come for cheap, so has limited trade value.
Jefferson however, is a big guy with big numbers and an expiring contract: u can find few in the league, so has good trade value.
Utah says no to this trade until Portland adds something.
