Blue Jays could be a fit for Upton

Post#1 » by Graham's Cracker » Tue Jul 10, 2012 5:18 pm

It’s possible the Blue Jays could be a fit for Upton, however. The Diamondbacks are known to like shortstop prospect Adeiny Hechavarria, though he wouldn’t be enough to tempt the Diamondbacks.

As much as we need pitching, Upton seems like the prototypical AA acquisition.

- Uber athletic
- Controllable on a reasonable contract for a number of years
- Buy low situation
- Young (24)

What do you think? Go all in with an offensive juggernaut and Jeff Mathis on the bump?

They'd be asking for Gose. Is Upton > Gose ?

Right now, yes because Gose hasn't played in the Majors yet. In the future probably Gose

It says they'd be looking for a 3B, SS or top of the rotation starter.

So dean, hech, aaron sanchez, and snider? I don't know, what do the informed posters here think?

Justin Upton's skill-set profiles him as one of the best players in the league when he's playing up to his ability. Gose is highly unlikely to ever be as good as Upton.

It would've been funnier to read his defense in a subsequent post. You took the fun out of it, Met. tsk tsk

Quiet, fools! We're slowly shaping public opinion that Gose for Upton is a great deal.
9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

this.

If Hech & Gose got us 80-90% of the way to an Upton deal, it'd be a no brainer IMO. Once you realize it's Gose, Hech, and their two favorite arms in our entire system, that's when I balk.

This! Personally, I think they should send us back Aaron Hill as well!

I definitely would send Rey Ordonez and Cameron Maybin for Upton.

He's owed over $40M on his contract, so I'm not sure Rogers would OK a trade.

That said, if the price in prospects isn't too bad, then of course you do it. Upton is a great talent. I would start with Hech, one of Gose or Marisnick, and one of Snider and Thames. The A-ball pitchers should be out of bounds in my opinion. There's no way they give up Sanchez.

I doubt that would be enough.

Upton has 3/38 left on his deal after this season which means he comes with cost certainty until he is 27. That is a pretty sweet deal, especially when you consider re-signing EE would cost maybe only slightly less than that. As mentioned, Upton has superstar potential with the bat.

I don't value any prospect in the high minors nearly as much as everyone else seems to (D'Arnaud aside) so using Gose, Hech, McDade, etc, as bait to land legit MLB talent is probably the smart thing to do. The real talent in the Jays system is in the lower minors. That will take a few years to develop. Use the upper minors to add MLB talent and go from there.

I would prefer the Jays go after pitching too, but that is going to be hard to come by in this market. The best bet is probably to try to find a team with an arby eligible pitcher that they don't want to pay, or go the one year stop-gap route which they should have done this season.

Hech (or Yunel - their choice), Snider, Gose + one pitcher not named Syndergaard/Sanchez; I'd be okay with...

Return to Toronto Blue Jays
