What the hell is the front office doing???

Post#1 » by cmw17 » Mon Jul 16, 2012 9:11 am

So during the last few Nash years, they sign Josh Childress, Hakim Warrick, Channing Frye, etc. to horrendous contracts. And have therefore missed the playoffs and never shown any sign that they were serious about contending. And therefore let Nash leave without a fight. And as soon as he's gone, They start signing players with actual potential like Gordon (even though the Hornets matched), Dragic, Beasley, and now Scola???? If they actually did some of these things while Nash was here, don't you think it would make them into serious playoff contenders and would make Nash decide to stay?

I don't get it, I thought the reason why they didn't want to sign Nash to a contract he deserves was because they wanted to rebuild and start over with young blood. How are they gonna do that if they start signing good veteran players like Scola?

So they had one superstar in Nash, and a bunch of mediocre players, and now they have no superstar and some good players. What does that mean? they are once again gonna be a mediocre overall team that are either gonna get the 8th seed or just miss the playoffs and once again not have a high draft pick, so they won't be able to rebuild properly.

Its hard enough to rebuild even if you have high draft picks every year - just look at Sacramento, but without them, forget about it. I really have no idea what the Suns front office is doing. Why let Nash go, if you're not gonna rebuild???

i don't understand how we aren't rebuilding right now. our team is awful. don't mistake our active offseason for a good one. we are a terrible team right now.

scola is a great signing, he's on waivers, it'll be one of the cheapest/best players in the league. gordon is gone. we have dragic and beasley on 3 years, both cheap players with huge upside. So far our off season is way better then I would have expected. we're still a bad team, but a fun team to watch. everyone wins.

If the roster was left as is and Dragic replaced Nash, Suns would battle the Bobcats for worst record in the league. Most of these ungrateful fans here have no clue just how important Steve was to the franchise, and that's the only thing that makes him leaving somewhat tolerable. They won't know what they had, until the season actually begins and they see just how pathetic the team is without the one player that made them go.

the worst place to be in sports in middle of the pack, the suns are one of the most proficient franchises in the league and staying there. and on top of that they have very inconsistent scouting.. more disappointments than surprises recently.. Clark, Lopez... Marshall, Morris? we'll see on both of those still and could go either way, but look at recent drafts (last 5 or so) and look at where the suns picked and then look if there's anyone on the list after they picked and see if there's players you would prefer now.

the Scola pickup if Nash was here makes sense to me, now all it does is move us up a few spots while not competing for anything more than 8th seed at best and cuts into the minutes of the guys we should be developing or seeing if they can reclaim their career

I felt better about their off season before we added scola even if we added no one else of significance

I understand your frustration, but why can't we rebuild through trades/Free agents as well? We still got a ton of picks from the Lakers that should help in the next 3 years.

we got 4, one very late first 2 seconds and probably late first.. that's hardly anything to bank the future on, of those 4 i'd be surprised if more than one make the team, maybe two, sure we could package them for something, or use them to pay for one of our mistakes, but they are hardly the salvation of the future. I would have rather had Shumpert

those picks are worthless. Lakers will probably have one of the best record in the League the next few years. How often do picks 28-30 in the first round or any picks in the 2nd round turn out to be difference maker type of players? Once in a blue moon.

This team will sort of be like the Denver Nuggets. A bunch of decent players, no stars which will always be battling for the last spot in the playoffs and not making it past the first round. This team with Nash would be a different story, but it's wayyyy too little too late by the front office. They should have been this aggressive while they still had Steve, now it's just pointless.

You do have a good point about why we let Nash go, if we are re-tooling. I myself was thinking the same thing.

I think the Suns want to turn over a new leaf: Find a new identity, a younger identity. The franchise knows Steve won't play forever, which is why they felt they would rather bite the bullet now, let him go, and re-tool the roster with youth.

The Suns won't be contending next season. We are a playoff team IMO, but we aren't contending. Letting Nash go not only allows Nash to contend NOW, (which is what he wanted) but also allows us to re-tool with young players with high potential., which is what our fanbase wanted.

I know we've had a bit of a past apst cmw17, but you do raise a good point here, and I do commend you for it.

Seriously? The Front Office did a damn good job so far into the off-season, phenomenal actually. Going into the offseason I couldn't predict this. I predicted we'd get Mayo/Beasley, and thought getting Dragic would just be too damn good to be true. It is actually happening and it's even better because we also got Scola (though I was pretty damn confident we'd be getting Millsap instead).

I don't understand what some of you fans wanted. Did you want the front office to sit on it's hands, tank another year, HOPING to land treasure in next year's free agency? What player would be enticed to come here without all the free agents we just picked up? The only reasonable border-line all-star is James Harden, CP3 and Dwight would NEVER come here with the roster the way it was, to think that is foolish. It's just as bad to think we can land another Kevin Durant, ask the Wolves/Kings fans how it feels to miss the playoffs for half a decade, and they still suck! Bobcats still have nothing.

To answer the OP"s question, the Suns aren't taking the rebuild process as slow as you may like, they are retooling, and also adding draft picks. I am right behind the front office for once, mostly because I feel like they've done everything I've wanted them to do this offseason.

This team is far away from a playoff team right now. Dudley is our only proven wing player at this point and you need propably two more proven players. Add Redd and Mayo and this is a pretty good team, though. Hell, I'd bring back Hill and let Beasley be our sixth man off the bench, the defense in our first unit is not even mediocre right now.

If the team stays the way it is the tankers n the board don't have to worry, we'll get a high pick just look at the Western Conference.

I too believe we aren't a playoff team but with another piece we can be top 8. One more decent player can get us into the playoffs but definitely not contend yet.

I disagree. I honestly believe that this team can easily make playoffs next season.

Last season, we started out extremely poor. Even with Nash playing like an MVP, and Gortat doing his best Tim Duncan impersonation, we had an abysmal start to the season.

Post all-star break however, it was a different story. The bench unit rose up, took charge, and on the back of Telfair, Redd and Lopez, we clawed our way back up the rope, good enough for ninth seed, even though Nash's back started to play up.

Next season, we are a completely new team. With Dragic playing his awesome attacking game, and with two perimeter great scorers in (OJ?) and Beasley, and a finesse man down low/mid (Scola) we have a very well rounded attack (in contrast to the Phoenix Suns Two-Man Team) Our newest additions also allow us to move Frye and Dudley to the bench, strengthening our bench unit.

People immediately look at next season's roster without Nash and immediately think "Oh no, no Nash. That team is going to suck." But what people dont realise that even with Nash playing at an MVP level, he couldn't bring us closer. It was the bench, not Nash, that did the job for us last season. With next season's new and improved bench, and our more balanced starting unit, we should make playoffs pretty easily.

Starters
Dragic
OJ?
Beasley
Scola
Gortat

Bench
Telfair/Marshall
Redd? (Brown?)
Dudley
Morris
Frye

P.S Take it with a grain of salt. I mean, I predicted the 5th seed in the West last season. Just posting my opinion here. :D

I understand your point but if we don't add Mayo to this team I don't see uns anywhere near the playoffs. There are some huge question marks surrounding this team. How will Dragic play (remember he was awful in his last season here), what about Beasley (chucker, no team player, no defense), what about our shooting guard problem?

If we sign Mayo, Beasley plays for the team and we add another veteran on the wing (Hill, Redd) this team could be dangerou but right now I don't see how we're going to make the playoffs. Which team should fall out of the top 8? Propably Dallas but there are some other teams like the Timberwolves or Warriors.

what is the front office doing??

They are pairing some talented young players with some veteran players.

i realy like the talentlevel so far, we are a young team with alot of upside and some good
older players like frye, gortat, scola and if the young guns live up to the hype and if we sign
mayo we are clearly a playoff team.

so i am very pleased with what the fo is doing right now

Props to the great one

What are you guys talking about?! This team could easily be sixth seed in the west. Maybe even the fifth, which is obviously more of a push. We all know the lakers, spurs, thunder, clippers, and probably Memphis will be the top teams. I think it all depends if we get oj mayo will determine if Memphis better than us. I highly doubt denver will be better than us. But even if they are that's a 7th seed. Our starting lineup could will be PG dragic SG mayo (hopefully) SF Beasley PF scola C gortat. Both bg men are capable of double doubles. Our guards are good and have great upside. And hopefully Beasley can make some type of noise. And we also have great depth with Marshall Dudley and Morris
