Just curious what RealGMers think.
Scenario: You're GM of the Jazz and have to cut either Paul Millsap or Al Jefferson, with their salary and cap hit removed entirely from your books. Who do you cut?

Re: Millsap vs. Jefferson
Jefferson, easily.
He's twice as expensive and has proven over and over again that he's not as good as his fancy footwork would otherwise make one believe. If HE was the one worth $7M a year, then he'd be worth keeping but given his deficiencies and how he's improved none of them since entering the league, he's not worth the kind of money he's being paid. He gives you below-average scoring efficiency, decent-ish passing and he doesn't cough the ball up, like ever. He's also a solid defensive rebounder, but isn't a stunner on the offensive glass. He's got a slightly above-positional-average touch on his J, reasonable range, enough that he fits into a PnR scheme and the D can't sag off of him. Nothing uber game-changing, but he's proven in Utah that with the right kind of offensive sets, he can come through on those shots. He's patently useless at drawing fouls, though, and he isn't a particularly good defender, either. Not epic-fail like Amare, but certainly not a positive-impact guy; his overall is -1.9 defensive RAPM at the moment, which would seem to square with that perception. -3.0 for 2011, -1.2 for 2010, -0.2 for 09, -3.1 for 08, etc, etc. An obvious trend, in other words, and not by a small margin, either.
Both of them expire after this season, so it's almost a moot point, but if I needed to get rid of one, I'd get rid of Jefferson because of the size of that contract.

Re: Millsap vs. Jefferson
I'd have to agree on Jefferson, although he's easily a better player than Millsap IMO. He's not twice the player as the contracts would suggest. If they were paid the same amount then Millsap would depart but for $15M I need a cornerstone championship player.

The lockout affected them all a little differently, a couple of them went completely stark raving nuts.

Re: Millsap vs. Jefferson
Millsap is actually noticeably more valuable on offense. He manages similar volume on wickedly superior scoring efficiency and similar offensive rebounding, but he isn't as good on the defensive glass as Jefferson. That's about it. Well, that and Jefferson is EPIC at not turning the ball over, whereas Millsap is merely very good at taking care of the ball.
