2012-13 Cavs Season Preview

Post#1 » by three6mofia » Thu Oct 11, 2012 11:22 pm

The Cleveland cavaliers are a relatively young and inexperienced team but they have one of the premier young talents in the league to build around in Kyrie Irving. Though im sure most expect the cavs to be in the lottery once again, there success this season will be dependent on two main factors that are at this point huge question marks. The first being how well can this team defend and the second being can this team find a true scorer to put along side kyrie. I do think that this team will eventually get things together on defense with a vet like Andy out there to mentor guys. As far as scoring goes...its looking pretty bad. Besides Kyrie the cavs have no natural scorers. Even last year an old antawn jamison was the teams second best scorer. I know that many fans are expecting big things from Waiters and maybe eventually big things could come. As for now if theres one thing thats clear its that this year will be a developmental year for Dion Waiters, packed with plenty of ups and downs. C.J. Miles is an excellent addition, although he is often inconsistent, he can at times look like the guy most scouts thought he would be(think Michael Redd type Sg). As far as the other guards go(Gibson,Pargo,) Im expecting them to play exactly how they've always played. Gibson looked much improved last year especially on D but his biggest concern is durability. Gee is an excellent athlete with a great frame and he has even added a couple moves on offense(although his shot release is still painfully slow), but he is another young cav that is painfuly inconsistent. Andy as always will be great as long as hes healthy but the biggest question regarding the cavs bigs will be about the improvement of tristan thompson. This will be the year we find out whether or not he will be this franchises starting 4 going forward. Can he develop some type of offensive go-to move? Can he rebound and block shots at a high rate consistently? He has the potential but its tough to call at this point. Altogether im predicting 30 wins and a top5 pick next year. Unfortunately for us there wont be any truly elite propects until the 2014 draft....hey well atleast weve got the leagues best young point guard to build around.

I hope this is our "Westbrook" year for the draft, like when KD and Westbrook came together, you knew they'd be good eventually and they were still competitive, but they still landed a #3 pick. It would be nice to grab someone like Shabazz, or even Archie Goodwin... I would love to get a solid 2 guard and bring Waiters off the bench in a Harden-esque role, but we'll see. I don't want us to be in the playoffs, because I still don't think we're good/talented enough to compete seriously at that level.

I am sure that Waiters was drafted to be the starting SG next to Kyrie. There is no way the Cavs can mimic the "OKC model".

But he doesn't play well off the ball at all. When he's handling the rock, Kyrie looks lost and visa versa. We could really use his skills as the first guard off the bench...
