no surprise to anyone who's read what I've said about it.

I have a lot of sympathy for Buck. Easy mistake to make.
Those making fun are taking cheap shots especially given
that can't possibly know how it looked as Buck saw it happen.

edit to add - Yeah, JRo, some of us remember the whole Buck-dagger
Imp drunk in a bar story. Too funny. Probably a good thing the GF
had no idea what Imp was talking about. He either would have received
a major blush or a serious slap.

I remember being critical of Buckhantzism's (sp?) in a couple columns when I used to cover the team for RealGM. I heard he was really upset about it. I think he's gotten a thicker skin over the years, and he definitely saved the day with his self-depreciating "retraction." I don't love Buck, but I've grown to like him in a DC sports homer sort of way. After all, he got his big start as a local sportscaster on Channel 5 (Yea, I know I didn't say Fox, deal with it, I'm old school).

Steve B has grown on me over the years, too.

Of course being a former HTS junkie, I still miss Mel Proctor. Nobody called an Orioles game better.

EDIT: BTW, I am glad Steve and Phil finally get their own thread. Long overdue.

Yeah, well how many conservatives say Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport even though it just rolls off the tongue.

I mean, does anyone call it Reagan? I think most just refer to it as "DCA" or "National" when referring to it.

I have noticed when I fast forward through a game--even if I don't know the outcome--it's just not the same as getting the full Buck & Phil effect. It's part of our commone heritage that makes us/condemns us to be Wiz fans. I consider Buck & Phil to be a plus as a Wiz fan and if you don't agree w/me listen to some of the other home team announcers around the league.

Since they can't actually see the game too well from how far back they're sitting, here's a suggestion: Tricked out opera glasses for Buck and Phil

Of course, if he wears these Buck might have to change his voice inflection to a more dignified and refined, "Dagger" He might go with a fake British accent.

Agreed. Buck and Phil are way better than most announcers. There's a few out there that I like, but most are terrible. Cleveland's color commentary guy must be the worst in professional sports. Everything point he makes is a patently obvious cliche. And the Boston guys are well known for their annoying homerism. Portland's guys don't do their homework and make up analysis on the fly that is 100% incorrect.

New Jersey's guys are real good.

no.

and to MS's point, I don't call it T-Marshall airport either even though I do
believe he was a GIANT of my times (in a more positive way than RR).

it was more about the angle than the distance.

the fact that the ball tickled the net as it went past also made it very
easy for his interpretation to be wrong.

as I'm told defense attorneys say, an eye witness is the most
UN-reliable of types of evidence.

I'm constantly struck by how often Dick Stockton can say something
that is completely wrong, ie. not what just happened.

He has a nice voice and might be a really decent guy, but he needs
to retire.

Watching it live my reaction was confusion. Ariza was clearly turning away in disgust but Buck was going nuts. I was like.....huh?

I would agree that they are better than most. Heinsohn is absolutely horrible.

I thought Mel was better at hoops than baseball.

Who remembers James Brown as our color analyst?
He was really good IMO.

On PTI, Kornheiser and Wilbon said the reason Buck blew the call is because Leonsis sold their usual seats, and that their current location is so bad they just can't see the court so well. Is this true?

A thread dedicated to Phil & Buck? How do you like that?

the current seats are not that bad. They just happen to be at an angle
that made it tricky to make the call in question. I think most people
here would take sitting in those seats anytime.

here is the view from those seats (put in sec 110 row T)

I don't blame Ted for a moment for selling those seats courtside.
I'm sure he's getting a pretty penny for them.

Wow, as far as broadcasting a game goes, those are damn lousy seats. If that angle is accurate, Kornheiser and Wilbon are right - Ted deserves the blame here. He may be getting a pretty penny for those seats, but he's also responsible for national ridicule for the Dagger comment. If I were Buck, I'd mention this somewhat angrily to the Wizards FO.
