Jose Bautista is a Diva
- "He’s a very intense guy, and he thrives on that,” Gibbons said. “But what happens is, it can cause some problems. ... When you explode on them, they might think you're showing them up and nobody likes to be shown up in the game.”
- "I don't see anything wrong with playing with emotion," Bautista said. "I have to rely on my eyes to dictate what I can do and not do on the field and if my eyes are telling me something, then I react. I don't mean any disrespect by it. I'm not trying to make anybody look bad, and I don't think I make anybody look bad by reacting."
- "When I see something that's out of line, I react," he said. "I'm not sitting there yelling at them all the time. A lot of times I just react and get back in the [batter's] box. Sometimes I have trouble, more than other players, dealing with my production being affected by somebody else's mediocrity. That's just the way I am as a person."
- "I am starting to feel annoyed about everybody pointing the finger at me reacting, like it's something negative," he said.

If this is how he reacts to Gibbons, could lead to some clashes, both are very stubborn. Jose needs to be humbled just a bit IMO.

Jose Bautista is awesome and so are those quotes. I'm glad you posted them, even if the conclusion you ultimately drew from them was completely misguided (this is a non-issue, he doesn't need to be "humbled"...whatever that means, and it certainly isn't going to cause any clashes between player and manager).
Toronto fans just aren't used to a star player that carries himself with the confidence/attitude he does and it rubs some of them the wrong way (but only when he's going through slumps, of course). My advice to those people is to get over it because he's not changing. Nor should he.

Was he as much like this when he was mashing 50HR?

Jose is the **** best. You can go right to hell.
9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

Re: Jose Bautista is a Diva
I love Jose as a player but his attitude at the plate is starting to get annoying and if I'm annoyed then the umps must be really annoyed and that's only going to hurt us if we are perceived as a team full of whiners. He wasn't like this when he was a part time player so he hasn't always been like this.He does seem to have this diva attittude where's he offended the the umps would dare call a strike on a pitch he doesn't swing at. We all have our Blue Jay glasses on but if Jose was a Yankee or Red Sox player, he would be branded as a complete whiner on this board.
He's a leader on the team and if they see him doing it all the time then the rest of the team starts doing it and we will get no calls from the umps and we become a very unlikable team. I don't want half the players in the lineup questioning every called strike because "hey Jose's doing it."

Does that mean I can wear my "You go girl!" t-shirt to games and the realGMers will know why it's hipster ironic?

Re: Jose Bautista is a Diva
I love Jose and his eye for taking pitches is well above average. I think this leads to him taking more borderline pitches than most batters. Some of these are called strikes and always will be because umpires aren't perfect. He has to learn to deal with that and not change his approach.
I like the swagger, but he will be a marked man with all of the bat flips and struts out of the box. Although last nights HR was big and timely and may have deserved such. You gotta know that Cleveland would be inspired by that though.
By the way, I dont like Swisher swagger either.

Hard to hit 50 HR when you've only played 2 games. He is on pace for 81, though.
And to answer non-sarcastically, yeah, I'm pretty sure he's been like this for a while.

Jose does those little things that baseball purists hate so it's easy to see why he's not very well liked around the league.
If he didn't play for the Jays, he wouldn't be very well liked around here either.

If that attitude got him 54 HR in 2010, and lead him to be one of the most productive players in terms of fWAR in 2011 before a still impressive 2012, then I say why change.
There is no question that Bautista isn't getting those superstar/Yankee calls that other players of his caliber get. Usually if it's in doubt it is a strike on him.

Re: Jose Bautista is a Diva
One of my favourite things about Bautista is as soon as he started to dominate, he carried himself with the swagger of a star. He didn't bother with the modesty that he had only just started to produce and it may not last. He believed he was a star and he's been one ever since.
I find he lets bad calls get in his head and he seems to do worse after a lot of arguing; but I still love his passion and intensity. You can tell how badly he wants to win.

I might be wrong but my memory tells me he wasn't this demonstrative in the midst of his 54 homer season. It was only after that year that he developed this super saiyan swag of his.
And I don't remember alot of borderline calls going against him in that 54 homer year but man, nowadays it seems like every other game he's getting rung up on something close.

Pretty much, but he's our diva. I'd prefer not to see it, but if he continues performing I'll get over it.
Of the quotes you listed, I love how he says "I don't mean any disrespect by it", and then follows that up by saying, "Sometimes I have trouble, more than other players, dealing with my production being affected by somebody else's mediocrity". Sorry Jose, but that is disrespect!

Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

He'll probably continue to get rung up too because of how demonstrative he is. It makes me uncomfortable watching him argue, I can't imagine a lot of umps are going to give him breaks. As big of a name as Bautista is, he's still in Toronto and we're still not a top team, so he's not going to get the breaks of the Yanks or Sox. He's only hurting his cause right now.

Of course. He got thrown from a game in New York for arguing a (terrible) call in 2010. He was also very demonstrative at the plate before he even became a star.
Why some of these whiners in the fanbase and media feel the need to complain about something that doesn't matter in the slightest (and something that happens regularly with many other players), I'm not sure. The complaints certainly weren't coming in 2010 and 2011. Maybe he just needs to have another one of those years again.

umpires hold grudges. theres a reason why even the TORONTO media is on this. he's a constant whiner. all players get in the face of umps at least once, but bautista overdoes it a lot. makes the team look bad and doesn't set a good example for the rest of the team. he is one of the leaders in the clubhouse and should show it.

That may be your perception, but there is no evidence to support that notion. As far as I can tell, he doesn't get a inordinate amount of calls either way.
