Wizards - next years Warriors East?

Post#1 » by dangermouse » Mon May 13, 2013 6:35 am

Young PG phenom - check

Upper tier young 3pt shooting 2 guard - check

Young do-it-all wing - TBD but Webster fits the bill if he can stay healthy. Ariza still here is good too.

Healthy Nene >>>>>> Healthy Lee

Bogut >>> Okafor but both are great/good defensive C's

We a few band-aids and a Jarret Jack away from making the playoffs and making some noise next year?

Well, in fairness, we took Mike Pence off their hands. Taking back Mahinmi is the least they can do.

Good observation..

Any average/above average 2-way PF/C (3rd big) will help us big-time.. I'd go as far as saying that we will be a better GSW next year (with reasonable health of course)..

The difference is that they are, by far, a better shooting team than the Wizards. Especially when you consider the shooting of Curry and Wall.

I think being Memphis/Chicago/Indiana good defensively means more in the playoffs than offense though, and the Wiz definitely have a chance at being that good. In terms of the deep ball the Warriors are best in class, but the Wiz aren't bad. They are 10th and just a litteral 10th of a percentage point away from being in the top 8. We can be streaky, but when Beal and Webster are on we are extremely dangerous.

I think this team can beat anyone not named the Heat in the East in a 7 game series if healthy next year

Agreed, but how long (especially in the playoffs) can you keep shooting the way they have though..??

Their shooting is way up from the regular season, and I really don't see how that's going to continue throughout the playoffs.. (.469 FG% & .398 3P% in the playoffs vs .439FG% & .347 3P% in the regular season)

I do think the Wizards are poised to make a significant leap next year. In general, good teams tend to get pretty good suddenly once they flip on the switch. I think that's about to happen to the Wizards.

I'm not sure they'll make it to the 2nd round in their first series though. Usually, it takes a year or two of failure before a team figures out how to win in the playoffs. Golden State was a bit of aberration, perhaps because they played another inexperienced playoff in team in Denver, who was missing their second-best player in Gallinari.

I could see the Wizards winning 45 games next year and getting the 5th seed, and losing in the first round.

But in reality. Nene goes down with a knee injury and misses 25 games. Okafor sits out for 15 games with a back injury and Beal misses 20 games with multiple ankle injuries.

Wiz win 37 games and miss the playoffs. EG is extended, Wittman is "released", and Ted tires to sell a bag of poop to the fans labeled: hope.

Wizboard continues to buy it.

Yup that sounds about right. :D

I think you took the comparison too literally in terms of shooting; when I think the overall argument was can the '13-'14 Wizards be this years Warriors. I think there are a lot of similarities:

1. PG- Curry is probably the best shooter in the game so Wall can't match him there, but Wall at the level he played the last month and a half is an all NBA performer who can make an impact all over the court. Wall also has one less year's experience and is 2 1/2 years younger then Curry

2. SG- Beal can be every bit the shooter that Thompson is. He's also nearly 4 years younger and has one less year of NBA experience. Klay has more size then Beal, but I think Beal has a better shot at becoming a a player who can create their own shot off the dribble and creating for others.

3. Nene/Bogut- Nene is more of a PF now but I'll lump these two together because minutes/injuries/salary make this an easy comp.

4. Forward- We have a combination of Martell/Ariza/Okafor. They have Lee and Barnes. This is their advantage ALTHOUGH I think their offense is more suiting to play small ball with Barnes playing 4 and losing Lee hasn't been a negative. Barnes is a more complete player than either Webster or Ariza so we just don't stack up there.

5. They have a better bench. Period. We need a couple of glue guys to emerge from the group of Seraphin/Booker/Vesely/ and Singleton. We can't keep rotating these four hoping one guy has it on a given night. We need improvement and consistency fron one of thes guys at minimum. We also just don't have a combo guard like Jcak on the roster and I think we all realize that its a need and can be an advantage with Wall's newfound offensive game.

In general this is a good comp. The Warriors made up for a bad draft pick (Epke Udoh) by doing well in a couple of trades and having Barnes fall into their lap. We need to nail this year's pick or deal it for more than a bandaid, and find a combo guard.

Wittman can be frustrating as a coach, some of his rotations don't make sense. But overall, he has done a great job with this young team.

Maybe we promote Cassell, then we both have ex-NBA guards as coaches :)

And on your first point, as a shooter Curry is better. Ive noticed he is a pretty good passer, but he does play off the ball quite a lot. Wall is looking to distribute first and foremost, apart from the stretch where he was going absolutely mental in the month of march i think it was, he was looking to score and was doing it from all over the floor. Wall's defense is much better. Curry gets those sneaky steals but he cant stay infront of quick guards with those busted ankles.

Im not putting Curry down, hes a top 10 PG in this league right now, maybe even top 5. But JW is up there too if you were watching late in the season. I dont think the gap between them is as wide as you may think.

Different division bro.

They have it easier than the Wizards.

Also nene is injury prone. and No real role players.

Bogut isn't? And look at the eastern playoff teams...ATL, Milwaukee, Boston all may take a step back.

Those Curry ankles are defiantly a concern. He seems to be game to game all the time. I wonder how long he will last. While Curry is the bomb, I feel more than fine that we have Wall. I think Wall will be strong and healthy next year and he is going to light it up.

And I'm really looking forward to Beal v2.0

Someone tagged J Jack as what we need and I think they really nailed it. Having a player who can do what he does off the bench would take this to a different level. Add that back up center and S4 and things start looking very good.

Going to be a big off season. They don't have to nail it all the way but they do have to fill "at least" one of those slots. And more importantly, not screw anything up.

They have time to get this right. They just have to keep making progress without locking into a move that closes doors moving forward.

And with EGs contract up the following year and more potential cap space, I see 2014 as the more critical year to make more of the bigger decisions.

You listed opponent percentages against the Warriors. Warriors shot .458, .403, .790 in the regular season.

Nothing would make me happier(well besides winning a championship but that ain't happening). I love the way the Warriors play and they're proving they can win games in the playoffs with it.

Not sure if we're the same type of team though. Wall isn't anywhere near as good a shooter as Curry, and Nene is way too injury prone. I do think Beal will be a star though, better than anyone the Warriors have besides Curry. But Wall has to become a superstar like Curry has developed into in order for us to win 45+ games and make the playoffs.

The problematical part is - it took GS this long to make the playoffs - once Wall & Beal reach the level of Curry & Thompson - what will be the health and shape of our front court?

That's really pushing it.

Boston and Milwaukee are not particularly likely to return the the playoffs next year, so we probably just need to be better than two from amongst Toronto, Detroit and Cleveland. We'll see who Cleveland and Detroit sign with their cap space, but the 7th or 8th seed will probably only require things going moderately well for us.

Return to Washington Wizards
