I know I can look this up but I figured it would be fun to get some of your answers. What was the reason that rodman left the pistons?Did they try and keep him?He was hitting his peak and was a great defender rebounder, why let him go?

He demanded a trade, and they moved him to San Antonio.

At that point, Rodman was really going off the rails. He was upset that Daly resigned, then he had a really bad divorce, and just kind of went of the deep end. I remember somebody found him sleeping in his car with a loaded rifle or shotgun.

In the Palace parking lot if I do recall. He was getting all out of control. This is before he started dyeing his hair.

I think the Daly thing was the primary thing. He was always a very insecure and emotionally unstable player with a lot of baggage, and had a very important relationship with Chuck Daly.

He didn't want to be a part of the team without Daly, so they traded him for Sean Elliott.

But THAT is a saga for another thread, and those who were actually watching basketball at that time can recount that better than I can.

He had a shotgun in his mouth and threatened to kill himself because he lost custody of his child. That is how you force a trade.

he was traded for Sean Elliot who flunked his physical because his kidneys didnt work. The Pistons could have nixed the trade but would rather have a guy with no kidneys than Rodman.

Odd thing about Sean Elliott is that after 1 unsuccessful season here he went back to San Antonio and went on to have a very successful few years as a supporting player/second option.

Return to Detroit Pistons
