Did You Ever Manage...A BC Reality Check

Post#1 » by lobosloboslobos » Tue May 21, 2013 8:30 pm

So many posters so totally confident that what a bunch of other people are doing is pure incompetent shyte. But I wonder how many of you are yourselves totally full of it and which of you have some idea what you're talking about? BC has been running an organization with how many - 100s of employees? 1,000 or more? And his bosses want to keep him around as president for some reason even though the team's performance has been far less than promised or desired. The reasons I've heard are:

- BC is blackmailing them
- BC has the board wrapped around his finger
- BC is a devilishly clever snake oil salesman
- tim leiwicke is an incompetent loser for letting himself be conned by BC
- etc.

Whereas, having at least some experience in running organizations, I know how incredibly hard it is to run a tight ship in all aspects. And I can imagine that while TL has carefully decided that it's time for a new basketball direction, that he may also have carefully decided that he values other aspects of BC's performance simply because it was on point, as it seems to have been in non-basketball areas. Certainly during those 7 years I can't think of a single meaningful scandal anywhere near the team, plus they have made money. etc. So for me, since I don't think it's very nice to sh*t on people when you really haven't got a clue what the story is, I prefer to consider the more likely scenario, which is that these are smart adults with a long track record of success making the best decisions they can for a whole bunch of reasons that you and I may never know about. For example, I could see BC agreeing to this not because he can't wait to screw over the new guy but because a) if the team does well it will help him land another GM job and if it doesn't it will give him a high-profile platform to try to make a move to another team or b) as someone suggested he may actually have other ambitions. Maybe he wants to be league president more than anything. Who knows?

But my question to you, oh despisers of BC's very name, is how many of you have managed even a small organization before, one with say 10 employees, and what do you think about this move to keep BC around? Because you I will listen to and take seriously when you critique this move. The rest of you blowhards spouting off meanly when you've never had any real organizational responsibility, and I mean running something as opposed to just being a cog in a bureaucratic machine, well, your hyper-critical whining I can't take too seriously.

So...

EDIT: and before everyone laughs at me for saying BC has a long track record of success I mean off the court. but i'd also ask all you people so sure he is a failure, to consider how your own career stacks up to his before insisting he has had so little success.

I have run an organization with 10 staff or more.

I've always thougt BC's job was much harder than people realized and that there were aspects he seemed to do really well. If TL is on the ball and has made the new hierarchy and power structure clear, and if he is convinced that BC is reasonably happy with it, then I don't have think it's a bad move to keep him. But TL must really have his sh*t together to make it work. And by all accounts he does. So I'm happy to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I don't have to manage an organization to know BC is an incompetent snake oil salesmen. His record speaks for itself.

That's all that has to be said. So when I say he sucks guess what? There is no prerequisite for me to hold a similar position to state that point. He sucks.

How many medical operations do you need to have successfully performed to know that you shouldn't leave forceps inside someone?

Aren't you even a little peeved that they're paying BC while he finds his next job (this is your own interpretation of things), yet they have not yet hired you?

yeah no doubt

but seriously, modding is just one example of how lots of times mods get ripped for stuff by posters at length when the posters don't really have a clue, and of how bogus and immature that is

doesn't that sound familiar?

I was manager in a small business that made a 4-5 million a year profit.
I reported directly to the president.
The president had autonomy pretty much but let the owner in on any thought processes on pretty much a daily basis. The president decides how things are going to run and the manager takes it to the employees and oversees their work and interactions.
There was a cfo that worked directly with the president and a controller who kind of worked with both.the president was ok but everyone were dummies so i lost interest in the company and went to work for myself. Forever :D

Op needs to read in between the lines. Why did tim state bc can leave if he finds an opportunity? This president job is nothing but bc being able to save face and collect a cheque as he looks for another job in the nba. Bc performance Is right in front of you in plain sight. Year after year this guy sold fans a dream of post season and believe me even with the rosters he Assembled he did a great job branding his turd.

Bc man...if ever I needed one man to fool the masses he's on my team.

Job's hard. Well paid. Needs unique skills. One in a million get hired to do it.

Do it well and you're uber rewarded. Do it badly and you get fired. Like most managerial positions.

Colangelo, possibly the nicest guy in the world and the life of the party, has done an objectively poor job here in Toronto as the Raptors GM. And is as right, and to be expected, he has been held accountable for his performance and has not had his contract renewed. As often happens in big corporations, though, he will still be paid handsomely to refrain from doing his job.

RealGMers ripping on landry fields, ask yourselfs some questions...

Have you ever shot 40% in an nba season? Are you a heady player who shoots a high percentage from the field mostly off cuts? Are you capable of shooting 65% from the free throw line? Do you play reasonable nba defence? Have you ever been offered 3 million dollars per annum by multiple nba teams for your services on the basketball court?

Some of this landy fields hate is just getting ridiculous and I'm wondering how many of you are truly qualified to criticize his performance.

We don't know how to play basketball so we can't critique a basketball player. We don't understand the sports business climate so we can't critique the heads at MLSE.

Shutdown this forum now, nothing to talk about.

Nice 8-) i think a sports team (as opposed to a corporate team) is a pretty different beast. things tend to be more clear cut because you can't really hide in a group of sweaty guys and accountability is very transparent. but still, did you ever find that as a team leader people didn't really understand the big picture, or some of the choices you made because they didn't have all the info etc.? is it possible that to a degree here in our echo chamber that is what happens a lot with BC? I'm not defending his record but resisting the easy and juvenile trashing that dominates any discussion of him and especially trying to give the new guy Leiwicke a freaking break, which people here are so unwilling to do. christ why not give the new guy a chance to run the team his way before trashing him? It's just so narrow-minded and ignorant as far as I'm concerned. Not you personally just the stream of constant black-and-white vitriol. i'd like to think that as a community we can show the new guy some slight greater degree of respect and restraint before the knives come out. Apparently not.

But since he's the guy who has won titles and run multi-billion dollar businesses successfully before and not me, I am not going to tell you he's an idiot or a fool because he demoted but didn't fire BC.

LOL. I long ago gave up hoping for mature, complex analysis on this board. Binary thinking is just about where it starts and ends. The absolute weakest dimension of any discussion here is the human one---what it means to manage an organization of real people, as opposed to playing NBA 2013K. And I never assume I know everything that is going on behind the scenes. I'm not sorry to see Colangelo go (well, sort of go) but I never thought that was going to be some sort of magic bullet. GMs make mistakes, Colangelo made too many.

You don't need to have accomplished the same things to criticize someone else though. For example, if my barber fails to cut my hair properly, I don't need to be able to cut hair properly to be able to criticize him. It's his job, and he should be expected to perform it reasonably. With that being said, the post-injury Landry Fields is not a bad player at all. He's probably the 2nd best rebounder on our team, plays solid defense, and most importantly, does helpful things on offense such as cutting, setting off screens and not chucking.

Presumably, BC isn't doing any basketball-related final decision making for the Raptors anymore, so all of this is moot. That being said, I hope you one day realize how stupid your premise is - that anyone is above the criticism of those incapable of doing their job. You can't possibly believe this, right?
