Pitching coach Bob Stanley says they are both just about ready. Johnson should be back next week, McGowan could be called up at anytime. It's interesting that McGowan was trying to be a starter last comeback because it was easier for him to stay healthy, and right now it appears that he is a bullpen pitcher.

I am pretty sure that the doctor advised that starting would put less stress on his arm because it would not all be max effort. Also, as a starter he would know when he would be pitching, rather than being in the 'pen and not having that certainty so he may not have had the leadtime required to get properly stretched out and warmed up
