Years ago Rondo coming out of college was compared to Hawks all time great Mookie Blaylock. Now, the Hawks' newest prospect Dennis Schroeder is being compared to Rondo, and it seems just. Superficially, they look the same, long arm, lanky, skinny, and big hands (Schroeder has the same lengh, reach, and hand size as Deron and Bledsoe, but not the weight). When i was watching Rondo in Kentucky, i said he looks like a 6'2 Scotty Pippen, both in build, defense, style of play, and IQ (and sub-par jump shot). The same can be said for Schroeder. The good news about Schroeder is that they say his jump shot has improved enough that he can hit a wide open three to maybe getting a .350 3FG% in the NBA (which Rondo still can't do).

What set Mookie and Rondo apart from other point guards was their speed and extremely high IQ and i think Schroeder is more than smart enough to eventually develop one of the best basketball IQ in the NBA down the road 5-6 years from now.

I don't think this pick has anything to do with Teague. Schroeder won't be coming over for at least 2 years. I think Ferry is just making the best pick talent wise at that point of the draft, that also helps out the Hawks financially this year and maybe next year.

Tom Penn showed the graphic last night where DS had a huge upswing in stats in 2 years and while that's hard to project as solid, the league sounded enamored with him.

Should Utah or MIL taken a chance on this kid? Possibly, but only time will tell whether this was a good move. Outside of a smaller Larkin or shotblocker Dieng, it could be a genius move.

Having him in the system is good in case JT is let go to sign a better deal for him.

I reviewed the Spurs roster, and while Parker was the exception and came in immediately, Manu and Splitter stayed overseas 3 years before surfacing in SA. I see the same happening here for our draft picks.

where did you get that from? i would be heavily disappointed if he stayed another two years in germany. this kid is ready for the nba. he's not starter material for a team that wants to make the playoffs, obviously. but give him some guidance from teague (if the hawks resign him) or from a veteran, and he won't take long to adjust to the nba. he already played against grown men and did very well.
as for the rondo comparison: rondo is more athletic, even back in college he was crazy athletic. defensively rondo is much more accomplished than dennis. but offensively dennis is way better than rondo when he came into the league. the only real similarities i see: long arms, big hands.

Love Schroeder. Looks like he is not fluent in English, though. Could slow development.

Great pick. Hope we bring back Devin to tutor Schroeder.

don't worry, he learned english for at least 5-6 years in school and will understand everything as english is the basketball language, there are a lot of american & international players in germany, therefore coaches speak a lot of english. his spoken english will improve day by day.

Awesome!!! Thanks.

now we just need to spring for an English tutor for Bebe and we should be good to go.

Sounds like the 2016 Summer Olympics will be very Hawks-centric with all the Atlanta players repping their countries in basketball.

I'd have liked to complete the trifecta and gotten Karasev also. But beggars can't be choosers.

I think you guys got a great pick in him! Maybe you should try and get Kaman to help his transition into the US? Just an idea that just popped into my mind, nothing more.

kaman is a michigan redneck and as american as it gets :D .
he is, like 15% of the americans, of german ancestry and was therefore entitled to play for the german national team. but that's about it. he definitely doesn't speak any german.

That sounds as if the C's (and therefore, probably other GMs as well) think he's not ready but needs to be stashed.

We may have drafted 2 great prospects who are too young for the NBA right now.

^Schroeder is the same age with the same experience as Tony Parker when he came to San Antonio.

If it was me id give the keys to Schroder from Day 1. Hes gonna struggle for awhile, but the kid has star potential. Atlanta isn't going anywhere with Teague running the show.

I don't disagree with you. Denny is the future. But I' wouldn't mind him coming off the bench for a year and getting a chance to learn slowly without the pressure of logging heavy minutes.

He won't just be adjusting to the NBA, but to the US also. This is where a strong minor league system would be useful. He could use a chance to mature, get stronger, perfect his English and learn without being thrown to the wolves just yet.

Hard to know the difference of level between German BBL 2013 and French ProA 2001, but at the same age :
Schröder : 40% from 22ft 2in (6.75m , actual FIBA 3pts distance)
Parker : 30% from 20ft 6in (6.25m , old FIBA 3pts distance) in 2001
(Parker made 40% from actual FIBA distance during his 7 games with ASVEL in 2011)

Free Throw:
Schröder : 83.2%
Parker : 74,7 %

He seems to be ahead of Parker regarding his shot.

Schröder was also averaging 3.2ast - 2.5rbd - 0.9stl - 2.5TO - 12pts in 25min/game
Schröder stats/33min : 4.2ast - 3.3rbd - 1,2stl - 3.3TO - 15.8pts
Parker was averaging 5.6ast - 2.7rbd - 2.3stl - 2.2TO - 14.7pts in 33min/game

On the flip side, he looks less ready than Parker on the rest of his game

Hi there, german Celtics fan here, love that the Hawks did take a flyer on Dennis.

Just wanted to throw some "inside information" to you guys. I saw Schröder twice this year playing against my hometown basketball team the Walter Tigers Tübingen in Germany and he crushed our guards. He was with out a doubt a top 3 point guard in Beko Basketball Bundesliga and won this season's MIP throphy.

The good stuff:
+ athleticism (lateral quickness, coast to coast player)
+ defense (on ball, p'n'r, good hands)
+ p'n'r ballhandling player
+ solid jump shot (improved a lot in the last year)

The bad stuff:
- real skinny (will get push arround by strong guards)
- some times careless with the ball (potential turnover prone)
- no mid-range game (either attacking or really long jumpshots/three pointers)
- age (needs playingtime to become an actual solid NBA player)

If you hope Schröder will come in and be an immediate factor you're wrong. I hope the Hawks organisation gives him time to adapt to NBA and developes him. With some hard work he can become a really really good point guard on the next level, but he needs to improve a few things first.

Just my two cents from overseas, hope i could give you some new informations.

Guards: Holiday, White, Pritchard
Wings: Tatum, Brown, Hauser
Bigs: Porzingis, Horford, Kornet

Thank you for the information!! It's really good to hear from someone who watched some of his games. What I noticed is that all of the bad stuff that you listed can be fixed
