APM or RAPM 97-02

Post#1 » by sp6r=underrated » Tue Jul 2, 2013 3:41 am

I know the on off stats are now totally in vogue and many people prefer them to box score production. I am shall we say skeptical of that approach but I do think the on off stats have value. I noticed recently that NBA now has the on off data from 97 listed on their site.

1. Has anyone calculated the APM or RAPM for that time period?

2. If so, could you provide a link to the info.

Well, at least Wayne Winston has calculated APM stats for 1999 and 2000 (2001 should be available as RAPM, look at colts18 sig). But he is not making all of that public.

To my knowledge nobody has the data from 1997 to 2000, there seems to be issue with retrieving the pbp from NBA.com in a proper way and the data lacks the specific names for players (just the surname) in order to create a matchupfile easier.

Thanks for the update, DavidStern advised me to message you for RAPM info and I was about to do so.

Do you think it's realistic for the pbp's to be parsed and analyzed by the end of the summer?
Now that's the difference between first and last place.

EvanZ is supposedly working on that. Maybe there are others I don't know about. We likely have to wait and see ...

I talked to EvanZ and he said he doesn't have time for it. I'm working on this now. I'm writing the script and stuff to retrieve and transform the data. The last name issue isn't a *huge* deal because I have a way of dealing with that, except in cases where teammates have the same last name, which I haven't looked for yet....
