Leyland Promises To Get Rivera Into ASG

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Jul 15, 2013 11:43 pm

Mariano Rivera is a member of the American League All-Star pitching staff and his presence might present a problem for manager Jim Leyland.

Rivera is in his final Major League season and the game is at Citi Field in New York, just miles from Yankee Stadium.

Regarded as the greatest closer in baseball history, Leyland says he'll get Rivera into Tuesday night's All-Star Game even he doesn't appear in a save situation.

"You can rest assured, he will be on the mound at some point and you will see him pitch, whether it be a hitter, an inning, depending on how the game goes," Leyland said. "But you will see No. 42 pitch."

Earlier during Monday's press conference, Leyland mentioned the dream of having Rivera close out an AL victory.

"I think it would be probably the most beautiful touch in the world if we could somehow get a lead on the National League and play the ninth inning with the greatest closer of all-time coming out of the bullpen," Leyland said in reference to Rivera.

"I assure you that would happen, but we need to get that lead first."
