ESPN NBA Player Rank has begun

Post#1 » by Neon1 » Mon Sep 16, 2013 4:02 pm

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/96802 ... gs-401-500

ESPN.com and the TrueHoop Network are ranking every NBA player for the third straight year -- and counting them down on Twitter (@ESPNNBA), from No. 500 to No. 1.

This year, we asked our ESPN Forecast panel to predict the overall level of play for each player for the upcoming NBA season. This includes both the quality and the quantity of his expected contributions, combined in one overall rating.

OUR NEW PREDICTION ENGINE

These #NBArank predictions are powered by ESPN Forecast.

As the rankings are announced, you can also find them here on the pages of ESPN.com.

We are starting by running through the "first" 100 players on September 16, and thereafter we will count them down one at a time on Twitter, until Oct. 29, opening night in the NBA.

There are about 420 NBA roster slots, with 30 teams averaging 14 players. That means that any player in below the 420 range is seen as marginal for the league.

Ronnie Price and Kyle O'Quinn are not marginal. By definition then, both are ranked to low. Price is probably around #12 on the Magic's depth chart, slotting him at around 360 in the NBA. O'Quinn will be a major minutes backup and about the #8 man on the team, for a slot at least in the low 200s (say 250-290).

A lot of teams carry the max of 15 so I would say it is at least 435. And at this point I would say Ronnie Price is a marginal NBA player. In the past he probably could have been ranked higher but this year I don't have a problem with that. As for O'Quinn that may be a little low but not that far off as while he may have some potential he still has yet to show that he will stick in the NBA for many years to come. As Magic Fans I think we tend to hope that he will and we can overvalue him somewhat but he has a lot to show before he can be rated that much higher.

And yeah O'Quinn will get major minutes but that is largely because he is one of the few backup centers that are actually on the roster. And if we trade Davis than the options behind Vuc aren't very good. And remember that even though he may high on the depth chart he is playing for a bad team.

401-500 Completed.....Price, O'Quinn, Lamb and Osby all were ranked in within the last 30 players...

Who is falling next? E'Twaun Moore, Hedo Turkoglu, Andrew Nicholson, Jason Maxiell, Mo Harkless, Glen Davis, Jameer Nelson, Arron Afflalo, Tobias Harris/Victor Oladipo, Nikola Vucevic is my guess.

Obviously O'Quinn is still an unknown, which is understandable. As a Magic fan who watched him play I believe however that his ranking is still unfair. A 2nd round center who shot a decent percentage and put up 4/4 as a yearlong backup isnt too shabby.

He will make a name for himself this season, especially with his fear the beard lol.

Nikola Vucevic made the Sports Illustrated Top 100 players ranking in at #100. No other Magician made it unless somebody was voted in somewhere between 1-30......highly unlikely.

I would argue that O'Quinn would make any of the 30 NBA rosters. As such, he is well above a bottom 400 player. That is my central argument.

ESPN just started the late 300s; it will be interesting to see if any of the Magic's young guns score this low by the so called "experts."

I know I am reaching but I am hoping that Kyle will get to be as close as possible to a Charles Oakley.
That would be awesome.

maybe but I would say there are some he wouldn't make.. He still has a lot to prove. All he has is potential and pretty much the same potential he had on draft night. Which is where pretty much everyone in the league passed on him and a bunch passed on him again in the second round. I like him too and think he has potential to better that ranking but that is hardly a sure thing and as Magic Fans I think we are a little biased. I do agree that O'Quinn should be higher but at most I would say in the 385-410 range. And just because a player will get minutes for a team or is in the middle of the depth chart doesn't mean you can expect him to be in the middle of the rankings. It is ranking of players not a ranking of where they fit on a team. There are a number of players who are further downon the depth chart or may see less minutes than O'Quinn but are better players.

Even though its a very small sample size(5 games started), as a starter, OQuinn couldnt of shown up any better.

27.6 mpg
------------
10.8 ppg
7.20 rpg
2.60 apg
0.60 bpg
0.60 spg

know I am reaching but I am hoping that Kyle will get to be as close as possible to a Charles Oakley.
That would be awesome.

That would be lovely, but I realistically see Kyle becoming a Tony Battie type of player.

If there is anything ESPN has been good at over the years, is properly giving ranking, hyping and crediting the Orlando Magic and their players.

Tanking without "intentionally" losing. Well done Henny.

Biggest question for me is who is the highest ranked on our team. I bet it is Afflalo, but could see Vucevic edge him out.

376-500 Ranked....Looking at some of the names I have seen already called I am shocked that we haven't seen guys like E'Twaun come off yet. I think Beasley and some guys like that have already been called (which is bogus).

It's definitely going to be Vuc and I don't think it will be close. In fact, depending on their criteria, I could see Harris above Afflalo as well.
