The Wheels have come off defensively

Four weeks in and I can just say this defense is on its way to a severe train wreck. Was Maranelli that good of a DC? Or was it Lovie? With better linebackers and similarly performing DBs, the defense has just fallen off. We rank:

15th against the rush giving up 106.3 yards a game vs 101.7 (8th) in 2012
23rd against the pass, giving up 277.8 yards a game vs 213.9 (8th) in 2012
26th in Points given up with an average of 28.5 a game! vs 17.3 (3rd) in 2012

I'd like to say that the 40 points given up against the Lions blew the stats out but in the other 3 games we gave up an average of 24.7 which wold put us 20th in the league.

The Defensive line is abysmal with I believe just 3 total sacks in 4 games? Projecting out to a total of 12 sacks! That's after registering 37 in 16 games in 2012.

This is SERIOUSLY worrisome for this year and the future if this D-Line needs to be rebuilt.

Luckily (smartly), we have a ton of cash to spend at years end.

Who's the available defensive coordinators out there and how long did Tucker sign a contract for? This guy blows.

The defense is looking pretty bleak with little to no signs of improvement. The bears get out of their 4-3 since they cant stop the pass out of it and then their nickle gets ran on, by, reggie, bush.

This is where Urlacher's mental dominance is missed because most of the problems aren't physical. I don't think Briggs is ready to be a defensive play caller.

To add some perspective on the defense, i have compiled some statistics regarding the pass D.

1. Bears are allowing a 65% completion percentage.(Which is 23rd in the nfl). So practically every guy we have gone against has had Peyton manning like accuracy on us. 6tds 6 ints allowed. Which amounts to an 87 qb rating against on average. So the the TDs allowed and ints arent bad but that is a high completion percentage.

I still stay we try to trade for Joe Haden. I'd easily give up a 1st and a 2nd and I'd think about two 1st. He's easily a top 3 CB in the NFL and if would have played for the Seahawks or Jets he'd be talked about like he was the best CB in the league.

What good would that do? The Bears already have two probowl corners.

Our passing defense has been our weakness even though Tillman and Jennings have been playing great. With three anchoring our defense we'd be elite again and we have someone to replace Tillman

Another elite defensive back wouldn't make us much better with our defensive line doing what it is right now..

Also have to take into account our own turnovers . We already have 9 in 4 games when last year we had 24 the entire season .

This defense has always went through periods where they gave up yards but not tds which we saw some of against the Lions holding them to fgs but then wearing down due to TOP and offensive turnovers.

No it wouldn't. The offense wins 9 times out of 10 no matter who's back there if there is no pass rush.

Especially if he doesnt have a place on the base defense.

So do we owe Urlacher an apology? Same scheme and players (even with Melton) with an upgrade over Roach but our defense getting used. Only thing different is Urlacher.

Or should we just slow down a little with this "terrible defense" thing. We lead the league in takeaways and last week outside those five minutes where the defense started on the 10 yard line 3 times in a row our defense play very well minus reggie bush

That's false. The only difference isn't just Urlacher. Melton was not playing anywhere close to his pro-bowl level last year. Peppers isn't playing close to his level last year either (though he has gotten better the past 2 weeks).

We also don't have Lovie and Marinelli. Say what you want about the offense under him, but Lovie was kind of an great defensive mind.

I remember giving up big plays last year because Lach was too slow, and I very much remember him getting hurt trying to go against Russell Wilson because he couldn't physically keep up with him.

Urlacher wouldn't make a difference as far as the production goes on the field. Maybe the leadership makes a slight difference, but you still have to be able to make plays. And because of his injuries, he was a shell of his former self.

Thats my point. We have the same players but they're not playing at the same level. We're playing the same defense even though our coaches are gone.

Urlacher definitely did a better job than Briggs when it comes to making defensive calls on the fly. And DJ Williams isnt that much of an upgrade production wise

Exactly.

I have been very disappointed in Briggs' ability to call plays & also his coverage ability. He has been horrible in pass defense so far this season.

Also, Mel Tucker appears to be in over his head as a defensive coordinator. Like others have mentioned in other threads, our defense & special teams are both suffering from bad coaching.
