Dwight: I'm An Intelligent Basketball Player

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Sat Oct 5, 2013 6:54 pm

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar criticized the basketball IQ of Dwight Howard during a television appearance.

"Dwight is an extraordinary athlete and has incredible athletic ability, but basketball is a game where the most important muscle that you use on the court is the one between your ears," said Abdul-Jabbar. "Dwight's basketball IQ is not up to speed for him to be a dominant player."

Howard quickly responded to the remarks.

"You can't win three Defensive Player of the Year trophies and be stupid. That can't be done," said Howard. "And I don't think any coach that has ever coached me has said I have a low IQ for basketball.

"Have I done some dumb stuff on the floor? Yes, every player has. Have I done some stupid things in life? Yes, it's life. We make mistakes and learn from them. It is what it is. I think I am very intelligent when it comes to the game of basketball. I have been playing since I was 3 years old. Each year, I get a little smarter.

"People will have something to say. Is what it is. I'm in (Houston) now. This city has my back and we are going to ride together."

What's next? He's a loyal player to? All jokes aside, I'm excited for this season and hope the Rockets can make some noise. :D

The media just eats this up.

And again Dwight doesn't get it. When Kareem says "his IQ isn't up to speed for him to be a dominate player", Kareem wasn't talking defensively as Dwight thinks. The mental aspect is critical on both sides of the ball but in Dwight's case he has one side full and the other on less than half tank.

Offensively he doesn't get it, he's still a horrid passer out of double teams. I know what Kareem is getting at too bad Dwight doesn't. And for him to even mention that Kareem only mentioned this is because he left the Lakers is stupid. Saying it was "emotional" was incredibly stupid. When has Kareem ever been emotional about anything ?

Not a Miami Heat fan, but... sorry Dwight, nope, Miami will dominate this year, probably next, and maybe after that (if LeBron stays). THEN...MAYBE...but NOT LIKELY...you'll get a shot, but...meeeeh. With your 'cartoon-network' mentality, you won't be able to do jack.

MEH, thats all I have to say.

kareem said dwight doesnt dominate on both ends, i think kareem is wrong about the defensive end...gotta wonder if kareem is going senile nowdays...also, howard said kareem only met him once and didn't want to discuss basketball(on court stuff). we now know kareem wasn't truly really interested in helping howard with his game. no doubt if howard re-signed with lakers, we wouldn't be hearing all this stuff from kareem...kareem is saying it now only after howard left.

Again, Kareem coached against Dwight and said he found it easy; said Dwight is lacking on both ends. Hakeem called him raw, after a decade of pro ball. What is the real difference between the two critiques? Both are essentially saying that Dwight has gotten by on his tremendous physical gifts w/o any real development, mentally or physically. Or else, can you think of an example of a raw player with a high BBIQ?

As far as understanding defensive and offensive concepts on the floor, yes he actually is pretty smart.

Good god, quit being such a homer. Kareem offered his help but it was Dwight's choice to not work with him. “People talked about Kareem [Abdul-Jabbar] and working with him,” Howard said. “But I’m not a 7-footer. I felt like working with Kareem, I’d have to change my game."
