POLL: Name/Logo Change?

Post#1 » by Ranma » Tue Nov 19, 2013 12:21 pm

Personally, I mostly disagree with Hoffarth about changing the team name. Going with a new name at this point would be more gimmicky than a signal of a culture change. Keeping the name would maintain that connection to the die-hard fans who’ve stuck with the team through the many lean years. However, changing the logo would be another story altogether as I’ve always felt like it was a knock-off of the Lakers’ logo. In fact, I mentioned that in a seminar held at UCI by HEILBrice, the marketing firm for the Clippers, a few years ago. Needless to say, no progress was made since then. Hopefully, Doc recognizes the need for the logo change and is already implementing measures in the process.

Tom Hoffarth, Los Angeles Daily News (11/17/13)
Here’s the perfect way to turn this Sterling-Silver connection into gold: Change the team’s name.

New coach and former Clippers point guard Doc Rivers already has lobbed the idea up there to change the culture and image by suggesting they cover up those Lakers championship banners up on the Staples Center wall whenever the Clippers are in the building for a home game.

Except everyone knows what’s behind that curtain. And what the Clippers are trying to hide.

“You do not change your culture by changing your name,” longtime Clippers broadcaster Ralph Lawler said. “You do it by changing the way you do business. In case you haven’t noticed, that has been happening the past several years.

“Witness the league’s seventh-highest payroll and the current streak of 98 straight sellouts, not to mention the product on the court and the upgraded front office.”

“A name change would signal to many that they are trying to run from their past rather than continue to ease into their future,” said David Carter, the well-versed L.A. sports expert as executive director role for the Sports Business Institute and professor at USC’s Marshall School of Business.

“Assembling a consistently competitive team with credible ties to the community achieves the same effect, namely a repositioning of the team in the eyes of fans, sponsors and others that spend time and money with the team.”

If you’re bent on changing the Clippers’ culture, how about the nickname?

While I don't want a name change at all. I'm all for being the L.A. Knights. Then we can break the 19 age rule and sign a little kid to help us win the championship.
If the Clippers win the championship next year I'm getting banned from RealGM

Voted for neither.

If the logo was changed, I don't think it would be a big deal provided that it was an improvement. There's no reason to change the name though. The majority of people who believe that the name should be changed are not even fans of the team.

why, as Clipper fans, do we even entertain stuff like this? I hate to sound so undergrad/ revolutionary....but these people really know nothing of our struggle.

we're talking about a changing of the culture in 2013? No. Just because you choose to view the Clippers current success in a vacuum, doesnt meant we should adhere to your suggestions for a culture change....

for any Clipper fan OR any person who actually followed the Clippers for the last 15 years knows:
- our culture change started in the mid 2000s when we were able to bring FAs in for the 1st time....when we made the playoffs in 2006 and won a playoff series
- that murphy's law broke one of our favorite groups up and because of that we had to go back into the cellar (which sort of is a sore spot for me)
- that we missed on Baron Davis but the fact that we even signed him is amazing and indicative of a culture change.
- that our own dropped $50 million on a practice facility in Playa Del Rey...whatever...one of the Del Reys...i drive past it on my way to the Westchester Y...who cares

no no no...dont view any of those things above.
just view us in your little BS vacuum....the one that says, this franchise was 0 until they lucked up n grabbed Cliff, when Cliff wouldn't have even considered us if we didn't lay down ALL OF THAT FOUNDATION and pitch it to LeBron who shared agents with CP3 at the time

eff your name change and the slippery slope that probably leads to us moving back to San Diego.
we're winning the ship in Los Angeles as the damn Clippers and that ring is about all you're gonna need to see for a culture change.

Whatever we do let's not do it because of the Lakers, I don't think we need to be looking to distance ourselves from them or anything like that, we are our own thing and they are their thing, only Laker fans give a f*ck about any kind of comparison.

Agree with Quake Griffin too, let's not act like the Clippers were born when Paul came here and we need to be this new shiny thing and erase everything that happened before.
