Eerie coincidence

I'm not a Grizzlies fan, but I just realized something.

I'll tell you a story about a franchise I'll call "Franchise X".

Franchise X's best player was a 7-1, DPOY award-winning center. This franchise's team was good, but not amazing. It had an upper limit of the conference finals, but no farther. Then one year, said star center suffers a serious injury, removing Franchise X from playoff contention. Seizing the opportunity, Franchise X promptly tanks, then proceeds to draft a one-in-a-million, history-of-basketball-changing, Hall-of-Fame-and-then-some player, and Franchise X has been successful ever since.

You've probably guessed that Franchise X is the San Antonio Spurs, and this was about the Spurs in 1996-97.

That would be true, but look again.

The first four sentences of this paragraph are a virtually exact description of the 2013-14 Memphis Grizzlies.

Just some food for thought.

The difference somewhat in this case is that the David Robinson suffered a season ending injury and Marc Gasol is expected to miss 12 weeks. Still I get the analogy. If the Grizzlies continue to lose games like this, it's likely they will look to the tanking side of things. With the persistant rumors of the Z-Bo trades keep popping up, he'll likely be moved in the name of saving money and draw some free agents to the team if possible.
