Patty Mills?

Post#1 » by nurseryc » Wed Jan 15, 2014 11:18 am

Mills is having his best NBA season of his career and is in short minutes proving very efficient producing career highs in multiple areas including points. What are your thoughts of Mills moving forward?

I like his production this season, but have to question whether he has a long term future in San Antonio.

He obviously is not a starting material PG. What he can be is sort of like a JJ Barea type. He needs a playmaking SG next to him, otherwise if you count on him being the primary ballhandler/playmaker for your second unit, then it wouldn't be very good.

Mills is a FA this summer, and I don't know the kind of money he'll command, but I don't think Spurs should offer anything more than 2.5 mil. I'm more than alright if his minutes is taken by Cory Joseph next year. But I do feel that he's currently the best backup PG we have and a better partner to Manu Ginobili on the 2nd unit than Cory Joseph is.

Love him as a backup. He doesn't turn the ball over, shoots the lights out and plays great defense.

i still think he could start @ PG somewhere in the future.

But what he's doing for us is perfect for both parties atm.

I like him but I doubt he is back here next year. Someone will pay him starting PG money and we can't afford that. De Colo or Joseph will have to improve next year or we will have to look for a cheaper option in FA.

Not for a team that has hopes of contending. Though saying that, Chalmers starts for the back-to-back champs so anything is possible.

i'm probably reaching a bit b/c i love the guy but yeah, The circumstances would have to be perfect for him to be a starter for a contender.

I personally think he is one of the most underrated players in the nba... Who knows where he will end up next year he may be loyal and stay with the spurs for the cheap

I have no doubt that he likes playing for the Spurs but I think he feels he's worthy of starting in the NBA. He's wrong of course, but I don't begrudge the confidence he has in his ability. Considering last season he was practically an afterthought to this year being a solid rotation player, maybe he can pull it off and start someplace that hasn't got championship aspirations.

I personally hope he sticks with us, as I love his hustle and demeanor.

I'm wondering, how did you get the impression that he feels he's worthy of starting? Did he ever say anything that gives you that vibe?

Nothing specific, and nothing I've read/heard him say. Just more of a vibe. I don't think it's a bad thing. I think most reserves would rather start. I have no problem with a player having that level of confidence in himself.

I think he could definitely be a starter in the right situation, but think he will have to choose right situation over money. If someone is going to offer him big dollars, it won't be a contender. I would prefer him to stay with the Spurs. The Heat would work and I think he is a definite upgrade over Chalmers, but will the Heat be the same Heat next year???
He didn't get any playing time last season as he was not fit and Pops told him that. He is so much leaner this year and he finally realised the extra work required. I can only see him getter better next season.

Does Patty have a case for MIP this year? He won't get it obviously, but I think his ascension from towel-waving mascot to genuine rotation player should be recognized.

He's improved, but not nearly enough to make a case for MIP though.

His first season with us, statistically was the same as this year.

2012, 10.3 points, 1.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 48% FG, 43% 3PT, 16 minutes (16 games only)

2014, 10 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 47% FG, 42% 3PT, 18 minutes

MIP I think should be about guys who had a breakout not simply because they play more minutes than the year before. I'm more inclined to give them to guys who plays about the same minutes as the year before, but had a leap in atleast a couple of categories.

My guess is Dragic.

Mills is still somewhat inconsistent, but he definitely seems to be getting better. If the fans were actually paying attention they would have noticed that Ginobilli has been inconsistent pretty much his whole career (outside of one year when he was at his peak), so I don't think that I would crucify Mills for it. To me he is one of those guys that you ride when he is hot, and set him on the bench when he isn't.

I think that he has earned a 3 year deal for $3M per year with someone. Will the Spurs give him that? I have no idea. If the coaching staff felt like he can still improve a little with more consistent playing time, I would think that they would keep him. Personally, I think that they need to only keep one of Mills or Joseph, and just move on. Like they did with DeColo.

As far as MIP goes, not even close. Go look at Dragic's numbers last year and this year. He is at a true all star level this year. The numbers say that he should of gotten a spot instead of Parker on the west squad. I am pretty sure that they just wanted to put a Spur on the roster so Tony made it. There are several others besides Dragic who are also solid contenders for MIP, but definitely not Mills.

I don't rate Dragic a game winner. He's ok but lots of players just 'get stats'. His teammate Green is a more worthy MIP.

Mills could start for us with our current lineup and we could still be a 50 win team

I was really just using Dragic as an example. There are several worthy candidates. But Mills is not one of them. Really not even close.

Mills has had a nice year and definitely looks better than last year. I think that he will get a respectable contract somewhere. Hope the Spurs can keep him.
