Normal wingspan and standing reach.

Post#1 » by co_laper » Wed Jun 4, 2014 9:19 am

The combine had me wondering what my measurements was and I googled around but couldn't find articles that tells you what the normal measurements should be for someone my height. Wondering if you guys know...

My height is 5 feet 8.5 inches.
Wingspan is 5 feet 11 inches.
Standing reach is 7 feet 4.5 inches.

Are any of those below or above average for a normal person?

I've been told that I have long body and short legs. Don't know about my arms..

I thought the normal wingspan is when it's around your height. So maybe 1 inch more or 1 inch less than your height should be average.

I'm 1.77m tall and have a wingspan around 1.80m. Seems average to me

Yeah my wing span is exactly that of my height. My friend's arms are 2 inches shorter and we call him "T-Rex"

Most NBA players are well over their height in wingspan.

Here's a great article from last year on the subject.. shows you the average for every position in the league, along with some interesting analysis.

IMO, height is the most overrated factor in a player. You do nothing in the game with the top of your head. Can't shoot with the top of your head, can't dunk with it, can't block a shot, can't tip a pass... etc. WS and SR are what really matters.

http://ascreamingcomesacrossthecourt.bl ... r-nba.html

For instance, Taj Gibson had the longest wingspan and standing reach, (other than Hasheem Thabeet), in his draft class. At 6'9", a 7'4" WS and a 9'2" SR make him a freak of nature. It's why he's even more effective as a 5 than a 4 against many lineups.

Yup, height is pretty overrated by people. Elton Brand was/is called "undersized" despite having one of the longest reaches in the NBA, people were somehow surprised that a guy with a reach of 9'2 and wingspan of 7'5"5" was blocking shots and finishing so well despite his head being at 6'8.25" without shoes. Technically he's even really 6'9 with shoes if we give him 0.5 inches with shoes.

I mentioned it in when the Clippers traded Bledsoe and brought in Redick. Redick is listed at 6'5 (6'4 without shoes, 6'4.75 with shoes) Bledsoe is 6'1 (6'0 without shoes) but Bledsoe has a longer wingspan and reach.Redick 8'1.5 standing reach, 6'3.25 wingspan, Bledsoe 8'2 reach, 6'7.5" wingspan and Bledsoe is stronger, faster and can jump higher. I was one of the few Clipper fans that wanted Bledsoe at SG because other Clipper fans were mentioning players like Mayo, Redick, Ellis who despite their head height either had less length than Bledsoe or barely more, but people viewed it as a size upgrade just because of position labels and listed height. Though there were other reasons I wasn't huge on Monta and Mayo.

Defensively, the team got smaller at SG despite the idea that you now have a 6'5 guy as opposed to a 6'1 guy, and fans and even coaches and some GM's seem to forget this sometimes. The top of your head just isn't what is performing basketball activities, outside of seeing over the defense better, and there's a limit to the value of that, there's nothing that the top of your head is doing,

Length wise, Redick is a PG, not a SG, that's why despite not actually looking bad on defense when it comes to rotations, positioning, moving feet, contesting etc, his effectiveness just doesn't seem to be there, well he's a PG trying to contest SG's. If he had good length in proportion to his body, with the same activity and energy, he'd actually be an above average defender to good defender. Of course if he had that he would also be able to get off more shots against defenders and be a better finisher in the paint and therefore be a better NBA player. Redick has / has developed the shooting handling, off ball game (even more) and the tools skill wise to have been a starter his whole career, but not the physical tools. If he had length and he put in the same work, he would actually be an All-Star caliber player. Being able to get off a couple more shots cleanly a game and finish over (reach) / around or past (wingspan) defenders in the paint, that adds to your offensive efficacy and ability,

I've always wondered how they measure standing reach? Is it flatfooted? Tippy toes? With or without shoes? Do you just hold up your arm or stretch it as high as possible?

Can anyone tell me?

About the wingspan. Like others said it's "normal" (average) when it's the same as your height. Pretty much like me, i'm 1m82 with a 1m83 wingspan. In real life that's normal, in the nba that would make me a t-rex, especially since they'd inflate the height to 1m86.

I'm 6'1 with a 6'5 reach and yet my standing reaching is only 8'1 or 8'2

The average wingspan for an NBA player (even normal 6'0" guys) is +4 inches. I think that "around your height" thing is just an estimate. For the general population, the average might be +2 inches.

6'6" with a 7' wingspan here. I don't know my standing reach but I can hold on to a regulation net while flat-footed. Height is not as important as standing reach and wingspan. That is the absolute truth.

I'm 6'0'' with a 6'4'' wingspan and a standing reach (flat-footed) of 7'9''. Doesn't help that much as I'm just able to touch the rim when jumping. European athleticism without much training. :D

I've always wanted to know this, too. I sure hope it is flatfooted without shoes.

I heard that Mutombo was brought in on a stretcher before his measurements, because he had been laying flat for hours to keep his spine from compressing (like astronauts) to get the max measurement.

Motumbo came in on a stretcher because he was 37 on draft day. Dude is from the Congo, not even the birthers can find his birth certificate.

I forgot the link but i remember it.

It said that you have to have your backs againts the wall. Flat footed. And basically you just have both your hands up like superman and mark it on the wall.

Also, no shoes

i think long body/short legs is good. it means you move your feet quicker and you still have height.

i always thought kevin garnett looked like he had short legs
