When did you become a fan?

Post#1 » by blaha112 » Wed Jun 11, 2014 11:26 pm

I personally am a Pacer fan. BUT, I live in Detroit. When I got interested in the NBA Miller was the reason why. I wasn't sure if I would want to stay with the Pacers when he retired, but ultimately I fell in love with them. I Missed out on a championship, but stayed with the Pacers, and wouldn't have it any other way.

Friends and I were talking about the championship going on, and I was just curious where your fanhood started/ will go.

Nope, he was just being sarcastic and playing up to the "All Heat fans are bandwagoners" perception.

Followed many Individual players for most of the time that I watched basketball. Kemp, AI , mcgrady ,battier. My dad told me when I was in middle school in 2003 that their was a player who would be next Jordan. In that time a couple different sg/sf held the moniker of being "the next Jordan " so I didn't pay him much mind. In 2006 T Mac was starting to break down and the idea of a mcgrady and Yao championship were starting to disappear. I started watching wade in Miami and Bron in Cleveland. Never could really enjoy cavalier games because it was blatantly obvious Bron was carrying the whole franchise on his back day in a day out. I remember thinking after he played five season of Lebron being in Cleveland does he even still like basketball ? Having to do everything must have gotten on his nerves. Fast forward a couple seasons now I'm waiting for game four in the finals of 2014. Get game 4

Really liked Wade's play in college so I became a fan when the Heat drafted him.

I started paying attention to the Heat when Pat Riley was hired. I was just a kid though around 5-6 years old but my uncle got me to pay attention every game and taught me all the rules and stuff during that time.

1990-91 season for me. first Heat game I ever attended we got the beat down put on us by the Alvin Robertson led Milwaukee Bucks, was right around February 20th of 91 when I attended my first game as it was a birthday present from my uncle, who was a season ticket holder from 1989 to 2000.

My team was the Supersonics. Since they no longer exist, I just follow Lebron's career. Hopefully one day the NBA brings the Sonics back :(

I had very little interest in the NBA growing up. However, once LeBron came along and started to get hyped up in high school, I became a little interested in the league. I'd watch his games every now and then. Still, I hardly knew anything about the league as a whole.

After the formation of the Big Three, I became really, really intrigued by the league. It was such a sinister storyline. I started following a lot more closely around that time. The Heat's style of play is so damn entertaining.

I loved watching last year during the Heat's winning streak. That was the most fun I've ever had watching basketball. I found myself passionately rooting for them. Some of the games during that streak were immensely fun to watch (the Celtics comeback, the huge 28-30 point comeback, etc...). At that point I started checking Heat news pretty consistently, and have ever seen.

If LeBron leaves, I would probably go with him. But I'm not sure. I have become pretty attached to the Heat.

--

As a bonus, here's how I started watching my other teams.

49ers - started watching football in the mid-late 90's. 49ers were a dynasty in the late 80's / early 90's, so they had tons of fans. Virtually all of my classmates in elementary school liked them. They were the ones that got me into football, so naturally I was a fan of the team they liked. The 49ers were decent for a couple years, and then were awful for basically 2002-2010. Lots of brutal years following them!

Cardinals - started watching baseball in 1998 because of the home run chase between McGwire / Sosa. Because of the popularity of this race, Cardinals / Cubs both got tons of national broadcasts on ESPN. I saw the Cardinals so much that I grew close to the team and started to become a Cards fan, not just a McGwire fan.

I have such an eclectic mix of teams that it looks like I'm just a massive bandwagon that hops around (seeing as how all three are elite right now). Cardinals were mediocre when I started following them, I stuck with the Niners during their prolonged period of being awful, but Heat I'm basically an outright bandwagon for. ;)

I have opt in clauses on my fandom contract I can exercise over the next several off seasons.

Oh, it's this thread again ?
The monthly "Heat fans are bandwagoners" thread ?

I have an idea: how about you ask all the Lakers fans when they became fans and if it had anything to do with Shaq and Kobe joining the team ?

How about you ask Bulls fans when they became fans and if it had anything to do with Jordan being on the Bulls ?

Ask (older) Celtics fans if Bird had anything to do with their fandom.

Hell, you can do that with almost every team.
There are Magic fans who became fans because of Shaq and Penny.
There are Wolves fans who became fans because of Garnett.
There are (tons of) OKC fans who became fans because of Durant.
The fact that those teams didn't manage to win it all doesn't mean they don't have bandwagon fans, so get off your high horse before you hurt yourself.
