POLL: Will you be mad at Wade if he opts in?

Post#1 » by HurricaneKid » Mon Jun 16, 2014 1:51 pm

I am really torn on this. With all the aging veterans going through a 4th straight year 100 game+ season the wear and tear was evident this last week. It is clear the Heat need an infusion of youth and energy.

But the contractual situation is downright scary. Bosh and LeBron hold all the cards and could easily push this team back into the oblivion. I have had a great time watching this group and will be devastated if they don't come back for revenge with a new and improved squad.

But Wade can mess the whole thing up by taking what is owed to him. I would NEVER tell anyone not to cash 40MM in checks. Yet thats where I think I am. I don't think the Heat can get a championship roster put together if Wade makes 20M+ the next two years and I think CB and LBJ leave if he takes it. Making things worse, DWade is this franchise. Sure we had a nice run with Zo and TimBug but Wade is the Heat. He carried the Heat to the first Championship. And if anyone is deserving for a little backpay its him.

What do you think?

I voted yes. I will be mad because we have a chance to keep this thing going and build a Spurs like decade+++ long run.

I will be less mad if ALL 3 of the Big 3 opt in, but if Wade opts in and Lebron and/or Bosh opt out, yes I will be mad that he doesn't put winning first.

But Wade has done nothing in the past to suggest he won't put winning first. So there's that.

Wade also has refused to add a 3pt shot to his game. He was completely useless out there in finals. Just disgusting. I hope my favorite player would just retire already.

I do not think he will opt in unless he has retirement plans after the contract is over. As I said in another thread, after this contract expires he will be 2 years older and even more done athletically and will barely be worth the MLE..

So he could make 41 million in 2 years and then receive a 2 year 12 million contract afterwards (2 years 12 million is almost not even worth coming back for hence why I believe he will only opt in if he has retirement plans).

Or he can opt out and get 4 years 60 million. The second option gives him more money long term and also saves us 6-7 million plus.

I'd be furious. He overtook Dan Marino as my favorite athlete of all time a while ago, and I understand the sacrifices he's made. But if he really loves this team, the fanbase, and wants to continue winning he has to realize that he's got to sacrifice again to get some more talent in here. Younger talent, preferably. Wade opting in for a cap number that he isn't close to being worthy of half of it would just scream selfish to me.

Fortunately, that's never been what he's about. But if he suddenly changes I would consider boo'ing him at the season opener provided that decision prevents us from re-tooling considerably, or even costs us LeBron/Bosh returning. In fact, if he opted in and LeBron left because we couldn't improve the team enough I'd go from loving to hating Wade instantly.

If he opts out I wouldn't even consider offering 4-years/$60 million unless it's heavily backloaded. His first year contract needs to start at $12 million max, or he can walk and go back home to sit in a suit next to Derrick Rose.

Loyalty is awesome and all, but this is a business. It's about winning. I'll cry watching Wade wear another jersey, but I'd rather do that than hand him $15 million per season when he really isn't worth $10 million right now. Meeting in the middle considering all he's done for this franchise is fair game.

A backloaded contract would be nice... also team options instead of player options.. but he will never agree to that..

But look at the other side of it. If he opts in it shows that he clearly doesn't want to win anymore and he's cashing in. Not a good look in my opinion.

I would be beyond mad... he would basically **** all of us collectivly if he opts in... wich would most likely mean another wasted year of lebron because we are not going to win with a same team next year and that lebron is leaving and rightfully so i would even be mad on him... anyhow if he opts out, give him a 12 mill contract or let him walk ( sry after all you have done for us but you are not cost effective anymore ) and call Carmelo...

If this is the case shouldn't he opt in and take his 40MM+?

I mean he has kids with two women that are not his wife and this is his last shot at making real money. Business decision says he takes what is owed to him.

Wade has $40m in player options because he earned them. He should take the money and buy every bitter Heat fan a handkerchief to wipe away their salty tears with.

This is the line of thinking that got Kobe 24 mil per year, and we see where the Lakers are.

Winning is an instrumental side of this business, though. Winning prolongs his business in terms of endorsements and whatnot. It builds his legacy that he can cash in from even after his playing days are over with.

Here's an idea for all the angry Heat fans demanding that Wade sacrifice millions so the Heat can add more talent and keep winning ... start a kickstarter campaign to raise $20 million to give Wade if he opts out. That way Wade won't have to give up the money owed him, fans can have their winning team, and everyone is happy.
