Why didn't we draft Rodney Hood since we needed shooters?
When we got McGary and Huestis, I thought Presti didn't care about shooters, but he went on to sign Morrow. I get the McGary pick, but we could have drafted him after we drafted Hood. Huestis is a duplicate of Roberson and cannot really contribute this year since he is way too raw offensively, but Hood could have contributed right away being 6-8 and a lights-out shooter.
Is there something Morrow can do that Hood cannot? Or even better, have both of them be on the floor at the same time if we need more offense - it would be 3-point parade. We'd instantly turn into one of the best shooting teams in the NBA.
Would have been perfect if it were Hood + McGary we drafted.
It is harder to acquire a shooter than to acquire a guy like Huestis, and if Presti REALLY WANTED Huestis, he could have traded for him with a future 2nd round pick or something I am sure.

Presti made a promise.
Morrow is a dead eye shooter shot 47% from 3 last year in transition.
Hood and McGary would have been the perfect draft.

Roberson and Huestis were both drafted for the same reason Defense. These guys will give the big time scorer hell.

Because you used that pick on McGary, who looks like an awesome player?

This so hard. I hated the Mcgary pick but I am already falling in love with the kid.
“If you're getting stops and you're making threes and the other team's not scoring, that's when you're going to see a huge point difference there,” coach Billy Donovan said.

Every time you are about to question one of the Spurs or Thunders picks you need to stop, take a deep breath, and say nothing. This is becoming increasingly true for the other 3-4 teams with Spurs GMs running things now.

Eh, there's plenty of misses from both teams, but they certainly deserve the benefit of the doubt.

I don't count many misses at all. A few, but given what they've gotten on the non-misses it's pretty trivial.

Hood and McGary would have been the perfect draft.
I'd have been happier with that combo too but apparently McGary wouldn't have made it to 29. There was a rumor that McGary was going to Charlotte at 24 if we didn't take him.

I think something like half of SAS draft picks haven't even played with the team. OKC doesn't have as long of a track record but Aldrich, Green and Mullens as well as trading Bledsoe.

Re: Why didn't we draft Rodney Hood since we needed shooters
As a Spurs fan I can tell you our rate of success is pretty fantastic, with 1st round assets especially. There's one or two misses over the years, but that's about it. I'm not sure if you're expecting the Spurs to hit out of the park with every 2nd rounder, that's a bit unrealistic. OKC has a few misses too, but like I said, they're few and far between.

You are right, I doubt he would have dropped to 29.

Only Thunder bust is Cole Aldrich.

No doubt, since he'd have actually worked out with teams and given them his medical records if you hadn't promised to draft him.

Bj mullens
Jeff green
Immediately trading a few solid role players.
We have a short history, but even teams with great track records miss a lot. Also PJ, Huestis, Roberson and Lamb (yeah we didn't draft him but he hasn't played anywhere else) haven't proven anything yet.

Its hard for me to consider a 24th pick (Mullens) a bust. Late first round is always low risk high reward type picks.
Jeff Green was actually very solid for the Seattle/OKC franchise if you look at his numbers. Probably will never be an all-star but he is going to end up having a long a productive NBA career.

NBA trees are different. Can't rely on a 3 pt shooter from NCAA to work right awa.
In this aspect I agree the most with Presti: athletic freaks are much more desireable than a pure shooter..

Re: Why didn't we draft Rodney Hood since we needed shooters
The book is still wide open on PJ3, Lamb, Huestis, and Roberson. If Westbrook didn't go down last year, Jackson would have been is the same boat last year that Lamb and PJ3 are in. The 3rd year is a big year. I think PJ and Lamb will get it done.
Jeff Green was not a bust. Noah would have been a better selection in most people opinion. But, Jeff Green is not a bust.
Picking after #20 overall is not really bust territory. He has gone around the league a little bit but, if you ask any GM and say you will receive 3 picks @ #24 overall and you will get Ibaka, Mullens, and Reggie Jackson they would be very happy.

I almost look at this the complete opposite from the OP... To me signing Morrow a proven VERY good (and consistent) NBA shooter, says something to me more like "That's why we didn't draft them, because we wanted to sign a proven shooter".

Hood and Morrow are not mutually exclusive, we can have both.
Hood is on a rookie contract, is 6-8, and can also attack the basket off the dribble.
