I'm looking for a little info on your team

Post#1 » by jazzfan1971 » Thu Jul 24, 2014 7:36 pm

I'm starting up my offseason preview and wanted to get some info and feedback from you guys before I got going.

So, I come to you folks.

How do you see your depth chart breaking down?
What are the major story lines to your team this year?
How do you think you will finish record wise in the league? (what place? 1-30)
Tell me a little about your coaching situation.

Thanks in advance.

PG- Teague/Schroder/Mack
SG Korver/ Thabo/Bazermore/Jenkins
SF Carroll/Korver
PF MIlsap/Payne/Scott
C Horford/Payne/Antic/Brand

Storylines, More size and depth on the wing and Horford's health

I suppose they'll get 48-50 wins

I'm good with Budenholzer.
Where the offseason has more buzz happens.

Teague/Dennis/Mack
Korver/Thabo/Bazemore
Carroll
Millsap/Scott/Payne
Horford/Antic/Muscala

Major storyline is Horford coming back and internal growth because there are no impact additions. The front office once again fails to upgrade the teams talent.

Team will win 45-50 games if Horford, Teague, and Sap play atleast 70 games a piece.

Bud is overrated just like Ferry. People talk a lot about his system and how it makes players better and creates a better culture because of team basketball but we were a below .500 team last year. Why wasn't the system working when we went 7-21 in the months of Feb and March and had 3 horrible losing streaks of 8,6, and 6?

Record: just shy of 50 Ws - I'll go with 46. We're in the pack in the East which runs from the 3-4 seed out to the around the 10th but I'll peg us with a 6 seed (which is somewhat more optimistic than I put at other times).

Coaching: hire Coach Budenholzer (Coach Bud) before last season and feel he's a keeper. In fact, UTH hired his top lieutenant in Quin Snyder and we're rumored to be promoting from within (Darvin Ham who Snyder also wanted).

DC (* = still FA)
PG: Teague / Mack* / Schröder
Teague has been hot & cold over his career but was generally up last year. Mack is a solid backup who is still pretty young. Schröder is a high upside 2nd year player who has a ways to go.

SG: Korver / Bazemore / Jenkins
Korver led the league in TS% and is underrated in the other phases of the game. Bazemore came via FA and it appears that we're very high on the 25 yo. Jenkins is coming off a lost year due to a back injury which required surgery. He's still young (this is his 3rd year in the league) but I think most are slowly giving up hope that he'll realize the potential he showed in y1.

SF: Demarre / Thabo
This position will get some backup minute @ SG. Demarre developed into an average shooter to go with his very good D. Thabo is another signed FA who is known as a defensive stalwart. We'd hope that we can fix his shot and get his 3PT% back into the 40% range of 2-3 years ago over his slump last year.

PF: Millsap / Scott* / Payne
Millsap was a bargain FA signing who made the ASG for us last season. Part of our big 3 w/ Teague and Horford. Scott is a light it up shooter who can get scorching hot and win games by himself but doesn't offer much if his shot isn't falling. Payne is our 1st round pick who is projected as a stretch 4.

C: Horford / Antic / Muscala
We projected Horford as our star before a season ending injury last December. Adding Horford back into the mix is the major source of any Hawks' fans optimism is his return on top of the season last year. Antic proved to be a solid - if flawed - replacement who is better served as backup duty. Muscala was a 2nd round pick last year who made impressive strides in SL.

Teague/Schroder/Mack
Korver/Thabo/Bazemore
Carroll/Korver
Millsap/Payne/Scott
Horford/Muscala/Antic

Major storyline is if Horford's pecs are indeed made of paper or if they were freak accidents, and seeing if we can continue to build a system-based team, and if we have enough offensive talent/depth to make a deep playoff push.

I think we finish in the range of 50 wins.

Bud is NOT overrated; if anything he's underrated by the larger basketball world (outside of astute analysts like Zach Lowe). I think he's already a Top 5 coach, up there with Pops and Rick Carlisle.

Why not take a look at the players we had available during that stretch, then maybe you might understand why those losing streaks occurred. Pero went down, then Ayon, Brand playing 40 minutes, Scott playing 40 minutes, 8 players available some nights. Sap, KK, DMC all missed time during those stretches at the same time. It's one thing for a player to miss games, but the cumulative effect of those injuries added up.

Only reason I put Dennis behind Teague is because he will be given the backup job out of camp again like he was last year.

lol
The major storyline is the team playing a full season with Horford. Was the team being in 3rd place before Horf went down a fluke. i mean we did lose our starting all star center and 18 and 9 a night. Will Bazemore and Thabo be minor additions that pay big dividends since Thabo already stated he has a chip on his shoulder on how he was treated last season in OKC.

This guy says Bud and Ferry is overrated. He can't be taken serious. Bud is our first Real head coach since Lenny Wilkens. Since Lenny we have had a bunch of incompetent coaches and GMs. With Ferry, Bud, and the ASG butting out of basketball issues this is the most stable this organization has been in the past 15 years. Bud has bought a since of accountability to our players and being able to help improve and develop players. Look at DMC he actually looked like a NBA starter last season. Ferry has done the impossible by getting rid of Marvin and JJ. he has put us in position to go after good free agents, even though they don't want to sign here yet, it feels good to at least make an attempt. He has not wasted the cap by signing players that don't fit our system and just signing players just to say he did something. He keeps a tight ship in atl. Most Hawk fans don't know we have done anything until its being announced. Overall getting Ferry and Bud has been the best move since getting Mutombo to sign here in the 90s. Hawk fans finally have something we can build on and look forward to.

But being seriously, Who would you have as a coach as the Hawks, because every post you have done has put down the Hawks in one way or another. That is who you are and I aint trying to change you but i just curious about what should the Hawks done or got if you were GM?

Quit watching me and trying to judge me that is first. Next, you are incorrect I have not put the Hawks down in every post.

To answer your question. I think Bud will be fine but he is currently overrated. He is the coach of a below .500 team whom he nor his system could hold together during a stretch when they were as bad as anyone in the league save Philly. 7-21.

People say its the system but why couldn't the system keep us from being as bad as anyone in the league during that 7-21 stretch? People say Bud is great so why couldn't he keep us from going 7-21 during that stretch?

The end point to all of this overrating your coach and his system, letting your front office off the hook is getting to a point in the season where it is clear that we need an upgrade of talent on this team.

I am simply pointing it out right now. Ferry is not doing a good job managing assets and personnel nor upgrading talent on this team and it is not all about Bud or his system. We need an upgrade of talent to be a real competitor.

SBM I really want to know how you think a coach can help a team that is being forced by injuries to play Elton Brand 40+ MPG, Shelvin Mack 32 MPG, and even guys like Cartier Martin 20 MPG do better than 7-21 in a stretch.

Let's look at how many games our bench guys started in Feb/March:

Elton Brand: 9 starts
Shelvin Mack: 9 starts
Gustavo Ayon: 7 starts
Mike Scott: 3 starts
Cartier Martin: 3 starts

That's a combined 31 starts in TWO MONTHS. That is insane. That's more than double what teams have in their entire season.

Could Phil Jackson going to inspire Shelvin Mack to play like Jordan? Could Gregg Popovich turn Elton Brand into Tim Duncan? No, they couldn't. It's beyond (Please Use More Appropriate Word) to pin injuries on Bud.

It is insane to complain about coach Bud. He was awesome.

I'm expecting a 47-ish win season from the Hawks, and a 2nd round playoff appearance potentially.

Return to Atlanta Hawks
