2015 FREE AGENTS DEFENSE

Post#1 » by 49er4life1979 » Wed Oct 22, 2014 9:44 pm

Dan Skuta - I can see him walking and taking starters money elsewhere. The Niners have 2 studs at OLB Aldon and Lynch. And Brooks too, although I can see NIners asking Brooks to take a pay cut possibly. Lemonier is still on the roster too, I dont think they will give up on him that quickly.

Michael Wilhoite - See Skuta...He takes starters money elsewhere....Niners obviously have Borland backing up Willis and Bowman.

Chris Culliver - solid CB, good in the running game, although struggles with the deep ball. Has a fan in Baalke. Not sure about him at this point.

Perrish Cox - Priority to re-sign IMO. I can see Niners extending him during the season like they did Brock last year.

Chris Cook - If Niners lose Culliver, I can see them bringing him back again on another 1 year deal. He's done enough to warrant that. He'd likely be the 5th CB behind Brock, Cox, Ward, and Johnson next year.

As for Dobbs and TJE, I can see Niners letting them walk. Simple. They have Carradine and Dial waiting in the wings and they are cheaper.

I think resigning Cox is a higher priority... atm.... he's playing mvp-ish for our defense... plus it would still keep our secondary respectable, not elite but respectable....

Cully, i'm good with him leaving if it comes to it.... Unless he's signed for dirt cheap, i'm ok with this. Brock, Cox, Dontae(for us Fans rationale), then there's Acker n Reaser recovering plus whatever new add-in via draft or FA...

I can see Cook being left out for the same reason above.

Skuta, that's tough. We would be hinging that Lynch is n will become what we're seeing. That's a tough decision... NOT lol.... seriously, I think Lemonade gets cut to keep Skuta on for his STs n OLB depth.... unless we find someone better...

Whilhoite may be getting a bigger raise and if he leaves, we're ok with Borland serving as backup.

I want Skuta back really badly. Can't underestimate the importance of a special-teams ace.

Wilhoite probably won't go anywhere because he's a RFA at the end of the season.

I agree with Skuta... he's a quality pass rusher as a backup n fill in along with his STs... that's why I believe we either trade or cut or waive or w.e. with Lemonade unless they remove someone like Moody...

So whats the scenario with Wilhoite? I wonder if we can squeeze a 4th for him....

I am thinking Skuta gets offered starter money elsewhere. Quality player. Wilhoite is a RFA so what can we get for him?

I think it's either a 1st or a 3rd depending on what level of 1-year contract the Niners offer him. The 1st-round scenario would be more money of course, and nobody's paying that. So it'll probably be the 3rd-round level unless I'm missing something (and nobody's paying a 3rd either probably).

I think the Niners can sign him & then trade him for whatever, but I doubt that happens.

I can't see how you can call Lynch a stud OLB already.. He can rush the passer a bit but there is more to the position then just that. He has a lot to learn. I would love to keep Skuta as a back up in case someone gets hurt.

In order of priority

Cox
Culliver
Skuta
Wilhoite
TJE
Cool
Dobbs

Of course if the money is right. Going to be tough decisions after this year.

Yes only because DBs are hard to come by. He may not be great but he is solid and is good depth. Especially if we get banged up like last week.

Of course I don't wanna break the bank on him though. I realize we have acker and resder but they are still unknowns.

Yea with Dontae looking bright for us, then theres Acker and Reaser(who looked good in the draft) then we have the new draft prospects and of course FA, Cully seems almost expendable since he could be replaced.

If Cully was playing much better, a different story...

Cully is returning from the dreaded ACL tear that DBs usually take a while to bounce back from so I'm willing to see how he does towards the end of the season before saying yay or nay on him.

I agree. Brock is the only true vet CB we have on the books beyond this season. I can see the Niners extending Cox during the season like they did Brock last year. He has been very good for us. I would imagine Ward will continue to be the slot CB until he eventually takes over for Bethea at S, whenever that may happen. So Cully would be a welcome addition back at the right price of course, plus he is a Baalke favorite. One more corner to dress on gamedays next year would probably be either Acker or Reaser, unless they decide to draft one again.

The alternatives are Dante Johnson & Aker, so the Niners NEED To re-sign Culliver IMO. 'Cause you know Trent Reid I mean Trent Baalke isn't gonna sign a FA CB like I've been screaming for him to do the last 2 offseasons. The Niners should bring Culliver back and not just for 1 year; I'm talking 3 years minimum. This isn't because I think he's a great CB by any stretch of the imagination; it's because I don't want the crapy CB situation getting even worse.

If even a decent CB hits the trading block, the Niners need to get that guy. They should've signed Cromartie or Revis like I wanted 'em to.
