ACCORDING TO MATT MAIOCCO
He was asked which of the following 3 vets are most likely to return next season: Patrick Willis, Vernon Davis, or Michael Crabtree. The obvious answer was Willis. The reason Willis opted for season ending surgery is because is he thinks he has another 5 or 6 good years left. And he was having a great season until the injury. As for VD, he is having his worst season since his rookie year and his salary of 4.95 Mil for a 31 year old TE may be a bit high. Derek Carrier has shown some things as a receiver and Vance McDonald has been a solid blocker who has potential to be a good pass catcher as he was in college. The 49ers were right not to flinch when VD held out last summer. And finally, Crabtree who is a good but not great WR is due for unrestricted free agency. He is having a very subpar season that included some uncharacteristic drops, and quite a few of them. I was all for him getting an extension but not anymore, not after the type of season he's had and not with his injury history. I am quite happy with the receivers we have next season with Boldin, Stevie, Patton, Ellington, plus a high draft prick I am sure.

I agree with you. Crabtree has looked subpar. He has trouble getting separation fro average DBs. He isn't going to get a big payday from the 49ers and I doubt any other team after his perfomance this year.

What do you think end up happening to VD?

We trade him to Kansas City for Kelce, fleecing them of a good young tight end.
Just kidding, but we might trade him there for picks or someone else.

yea, that doesen't seem out of the realm of possibility. Hopefully the next OC will actually use Vance McDonald as a pass catcher which is what he was in college.

I don't think they are going to get rid of him, but who knows. The 49ers are so tight lipped about everything. I guess he could be a cap casualty next year. He makes too much to be an average TE. I still think his back is bothering him. One of those injuries that doesn't make the injury list but keeps a player from being effective.

Re: ACCORDING TO MATT MAIOCCO
Trade Vernon Davis for Aaron Murray or Tyler Bray an picks. That would give Smith another familiar target, a solid backup QB at worst who would push Kaepernick or be injury insurance, and it would give us some picks.

Re: ACCORDING TO MATT MAIOCCO
I think everyone is overreacting on VD a little bit yes his catches are down but we are also back to a quarterback who is one maybe two reads and during the offensive ineptitude Kaep is back to locking on his primary option and regressing. VD might have lost a step but he is nowhere near as bad as people make him out to be. same I think with Crabby.

Re: ACCORDING TO MATT MAIOCCO
If it were up to me neither would be back. Vernon Davis would be packaged in a trade of some sorts and let Michael Crabtree leave in FA.
There's some decent WR options in FA and it's a great WR class. I'd look to bring in at least two this off-season.

The 49ers are to blame in party for trying to make Kap into something is he is not, a pocket passer. Think back to how we played in 2012. They need to let him run more and be himself but of course they are afraid of injury which I understand. So that falls squarely on Harbaugh and Roman. And yes, Kap has regressed back somewhat in locking on to his primary read or maybe two at the most. Definitely need a new OC. Whatever happened to running the west coast offense Harbaugh promised in 2011? lol

Re: ACCORDING TO MATT MAIOCCO
I think Crabtree is gone. The drops, to me anyway, look like a lack of concentration. Meaning I think he has checked out for the season. He doesn't seem like he is happy. Let him walk. We don't have a single player on offense that is not replaceable right now, with Boldin/Staley being the only exceptions to me. That is including the coaching staff.

I had back surgery a year ago. If his back is bothering him, I can 100% attest to this. I have enough pain that there were times I would collapse for no reason. But you wouldn't be able to tell if I was doing anything. But I play in a baseball league and I literally couldn't get down in the outfield to field ground balls that got through. It affects every single move you make, and is amplified when you are doing physical activity. And I play rec sports, not even close to the level he is putting out. There were times when I was on so many pills just to play that I would be seeing double, or pass out for split seconds while running the bases etc. It was crazy. Still led the team in almost every single hitting category though. If I can toot my own horn just a bit.

That is a good personal account of what a back injury is like. Knock on wood, I haven't had any back issues yet. His drop off this year has been so dramatic. He seems to have lost more than a step and it just seems more to it than just getting a year older.
