Union rejects "cap smoothing": expect huge jump in salary cap 2016

So, if Roy and West opt in this summer, it looks like we could be going into 2016 with Paul George, CJ Miles, George Hill, Solo Hill, Damo Rudez, our 2015 1st rounder, and our 2016 1st rounder on e books for around $37million. The salary cap is expected to jump in one offseason to around $90m, or more. A max salary that summer would run around $23~ million. Theoretically, we could be looking at 2 max salary spots in one summer, with Paul George only being 26 years old. Just FYI. Could get interesting.

The problem of course is that many franchises will be in a similar position. I can't see us signing another 'big name' with the increased competition unless we (damn near) win it next year.

I think it is good news for guys like Stuckey. What I am worried about though is that this is being positioned as a non-negotiable, we might well see another lock-out which won't do anybody any good. It is the one thing I hate most about the way the NBA is set up.

if my math is right, this helps the max contract guys. the league proposed moving the cap up a little bit each year with the balance of the player pool being paid to the players association for distribution. I believe contracts like PG's are tied to the cap and are not a fixed number of dollars. didn't Paul agree to 23% of the cap with that number being recalculated every year? cap smoothing would have lowered a contract like that and put the savings into a pool. that's not happening.

Nope. He agreed to 27.5% of whatever the cap was in his first summer. All the raises are the same amount, and based off his first year salary, not re calculated every year.

I think you took that from me. I mistakenly bandied that info around a couple years back until I re read something I had misread. I was wrong then. Paul George's salary is locked in for the next 3 years, at least.

Theoretically, I agree. I just wonder if , all other things being similar, if players would choose to play with Paul George, and in a state with one of the lowest income taxes in the NBA.

There is no doubt he is popular with the USA squad guys, so there might be, certainly would be interesting.
