Trade idea...

Post#1 » by BIG BEN'S FRO » Thu Jun 11, 2015 1:53 pm

Not even sure if it's possible these days, but wondering what you guys would think of a Max extension Greg Monroe offer to Brooklyn for Joe Johnson and a future lotto protected first. It would use all of our salary cap money and reduce the burden on Brooklyn by more than 10M and add a quality PF. Of course it would only be if Monroe wanted to go there in the first place.

We would then likely draft a PF and likely have a Eastern playoff team, future cap space, great player who can lead and make 3s at the SF spot, and notch a pick in the process. Seems to check every box.

So we're assuming Monroe wants to go to Brooklyn? Why?

I guess you could sell him on being the centerpiece of their team but the cupboard is pretty bare and they don't have a lot of flexibility with picks due to the ridiculous KG/Pierce trade.

Why not send them Jennings & Butler instead?

We absorb the remaining salary with our cap space, S&T Monroe for say Ryan Anderson...which means #8 comes off the bench:

Drummond
Ryan Anderson
Joe Johnson
KCP
RJ
#8 (WCS)
Tolliver
Meeks
Dinwiddie

Plenty of shooting, could really make some noise if things fell right...then we'd be looking to add a stud FA when the cap explodes in 2016

Not sure Brooklyn has interest in Monroe when they already have Lopez and Plumlee.

I don't think Brooklyn would want Monroe on a max salary. Everything I've read says that they want to cut costs and trading a max contract for an expiring one doesn't seem to fit. They might want to keep Lopez around anyways.

My favorite "win now" idea is Jennings/Meeks for Joe Johnson (Saves BKN a bunch on the lux tax, leaves them with a wing piece to replace Johnson and a guy in Jennings who can give D-Will the frequent time off he likely needs) paired with a Monroe S&T for Millsap

I have real concerns about Jennings mentality coming back vs Jackson taking the long term PG spot. Is Jennings going to be fine with losing his job due to injury and accepting of a bench role in his FA walk year?

I am a big fan of the idea of Johnson though, especially on the cheap. He could give us a real outside scorer and play alongside any one of KCP/Butler/#8 pick (Winslow / Hezonja / Johnson).

The Nets have stated resigning Brook Lopez and Thad Young as their priorities, Monroe doesn't make a lot of sense.

Johnson as an expiring contract isn't the worst idea. I don't have a lot of faith that we're going to get a very good wing player in free agency. Joe Johnson as a one-year rental wouldn't be a bad idea. It also clears cap space, as Meeks' deal would be gone for the 2016 off-season as well.

I think Jackson is the guy BKN wants, not Monroe.
