Small Ball

Post#1 » by kavan » Sat Aug 15, 2015 11:50 am

I think what Gibby lacks the most is the small ball action from Cito Gastons days. Last night was opportune time to use Revere to steal a run with a squeeze or a drag bunt using his speed vs a guy who is almost unhittable. Anyone else think the Jays could of better played the end of the night only two Losses we have taken in last three weeks we could of stole the game.

I think Gibby is too fixed on the big swing and forgets a little small ball and playing your outs right, can get us a crucial win this could of been a playoff wild card game. Down 1 at home with runners on, you cannot give up the game like that. If Tulo went 12 pitches and stuck out how did he think Revere was going to do ... (obv Revere went up first but use his strength, play the game)

Yesterday frankly the coach lost us the game, I would even argue vs the Royals same deal.

Why would we ever handcuff an extremely good lineup by having them bunting with regularity.

Also, Revere is an excellent contact hitter; he very rarely strikes out, which means that a squeeze bunt is far more likely to fail than simply having him hit.

I'm certainly a fan of bunting in baseball but we see far more bunts in the NL because pitchers suck and they have to hit. Revere's a contact hitter who rarely strikes out (the last two days aside). Even with his poor average it's because he's been grounding out/hitting weak flyballs. On the whole his average will climb eventually but you let him hit in that situation. A hit to the 1B side scores a run and depending on where the ball it placed its a chance for Revere to leg out a hit.

Jays are not build for small ball. The regular guys on the roster that are good small ball players are Revere and Pillar.

This team is about power

His bunt attempt today was sad and for a guy who rarely strikes out, he has sure been striking out consistently lately. He hasn't run at all and his defense hasn't been noteworthy.

Colabello should be our every day left fielder.

In a four-game sample size he has five strikeouts, sure. His career mark is one every 10.8 PAs however, which is very low in the modern era...a top ten K rate in baseball from 2011-2015, actually.

I'm no fan of slap-and-run players either, but Revere will revert to what he has been soon enough: a guy who generates a lot of singles and **** all else.

Is there anything more predictable than fans complaining about not enough small ball when a great lineup goes into a slump?

Revere would be a disappointment if he was our lead off guy. But he is the #9 guy in the lineup. I know, I know, you only lead off once and thats at the start of the game, then everything changes.

...... but look back as far as 10 years. Think of all the #9 hitters in the Jays lineup. It will be a sad list. Thats where you dump the guys that cant hit. Revere is a damn good #9 hitter.

I agree though he hasent run much and his defense is average so far. Hopefully he breaks out though. He has a proven record.
