Greg Stiemsma to sign with Orlando: TWITTER rumour

Post#1 » by drsd » Thu Sep 10, 2015 8:02 am

[tweet]https://twitter.com/DWolfsonKSTP/status/641728100397547520[/tweet]

And a larger story:
OMD LINK

The Orlando Magic have another player coming to training camp. This one is a veteran who might be able to fill a need as a rim protector.

Darren Wolfson of KSTP in Minneapolis reports the Magic are close to a non-guaranteed deal with veteran center Greg Stiemsma. That would bring the list of potential Magic training camp invites to 17.

Unlike some other training camp signees, Stiemsma has to be considered to have some chance to make the roster, even with the Magic already pretty crowded in the front court and with free agent signee Jason Smith also new to the team.

As a Badger, I followed his college career closely; he seems to be a better pro-baller than he was in the NCAAs. Typical plodding center. Total lack of an offensive game, and his roll is simply to clock and take space. Not so sure about this signing.

Decent camp addition.

That 15th spot is pretty up in the air between Ejim, Harvey and now Stiemsma.

PG: Payton/Watson/Napier
SG: Oladipo/Fournier
SF: Harris/Hezonja/Marble
PF: Gordon/Frye/Smith/Nicholson
C: Vucevic/Dedmon

The question is where could they best use that 15th body?

I still think The Magic and Andrew Nicholson would like to part ways but if they could have moved him, they would have already.

This 15th spot is a true dilemma and the first preseason game is less than one month away.

I think Ejim has the best shot. He looks developed enough to contribute right away. Harvey is a project and Stiemsma is a stiff. Put Marble at SG and add Ejim as SF and you got yourself 3 decent players at every position (Smith is as much C as he is PF).

I would really like Ejim to make the roster. I haven't watched him play but he's young and I've heard great things about him. He could be a diamond in the rough. Would be kinda cool to find a guy the way the Heat found Whiteside.

I wouldn't mind Stiemsma either though. He could block some shots and it's always nice to have depth at C.

I love Greg Stiemsma.

Not only is he a top-flight shotblocker:

(check out the victim of block #2  )

...but he's also got some range on his jumper,

and he's a respectable FT shooter (career 70.5%)

if he was even capable of being a back up center, not a 3rd or 4th, then other teams desperate for size and shot blocking would have been all over him (Dallas, Charlotte, Portland, off the top of my head). he looks like what he is, 14th or 15th man on the bench to eat up a few minutes a night at center.

He hasn't really had much of a chance to prove his worth playing big minutes.

Rookie ('11-12) - BOS - KG/Pierce/Allen... ECF team... did well when he got minutes
Year 2 ('12-13) - MIN - Actually got some minutes and a handful of starts due to injury... did well
Year 3 ('13-14) - NOP - Got some minutes, competing with Jason Smith for AD/Ryno scraps... did well
Year 4 ('14-15) - TOR - Completely buried behind cavalcade of bigs: Patrick Patterson, Jonas Valanciunas, Amir Johnson, Tyler Hansbrough

I don't think he suddenly sucks, it's just that circumstances at his last stop, especially, screwed him over.

Smith, Frye, Stiemsma is our new Ridnour, W Green, B Gordon.

Like last year, I really wish we didn't have all three..
One of these scrub bigs is more then enough.

camp invite won't mean much, doubt he makes the team unless they really want an extra big body

Good for training camp, will be nice to have another shot blocker aside from Dedmon that the guards can practice finishing around the rim against.

I want to see what Ejim can do. He would not have left his overseas team unless he thought he might have a shot at making the team.

Stiemsma would be a good third center.

Tyler Harvey probably has a more uphill battle and he has not officially signed a contract yet.

The 15th spot is going to be more about strategy than anything else and neither guy will be guaranteed until January.

He never got big minutes because his foul rate is atrocious... plus he's just not that good overall.

How so exactly?

Better career shotblocker per-minute/ per-possession than Dedmon.
........Stiemsma | Dedmon
B/36: .........2.7 | 2.1
B/100P: .....4.0 | 3.0

More efficient shooter than Jason Smith (TS%, eFG%), comparable midrange shooter.

His career foul rate is actually identical to Dedmon's. His shotblocking rate, however, is superior to Dedmon's.

Good signing.

Per minute Stiemsma is a really good shotblocker.
