'14-'15 Roleplayer Analysis: D.J. Augustin

Post#1 » by getrichordie » Mon Oct 26, 2015 12:01 pm

I decided to do a little bit of analysis on the Thunder's post All-Star numbers. As we all know, we acquired Enes Kanter, Kyle Singler, D.J. Augustin, and Steve Novak. So let's see what kind of offensive and defensive impact they were able to have on our squad.

D.J. Augustin

Offense

Can he pass the rock? After doing a little math, Augustin passed the ball 1.72 times per minute vs Westbrook's 1.63 whereas Westbrook's passes led to more assists (.25 per minute) vs Augustin's (.17 per minute). Per 36 minutes, Augustin was 2nd on the team in assists, registering at 4.7, right behind Westbrook (9.7). Fun fact: Pre-All Star, Augustin was registering 7.6 assists per minute on the Pistons.

Can he shoot the three? Augustin shot 35.40 on 5.1 3PA per 36 minutes. source

Can he finish at the rim? In his last 15 games of the season, Augustin drove the hole 3.8 times per his 22.5 minutes on the floor and only finished 31.6% of the time for 0.8 points per game on 1.3 FGA. Augustin did pass at a team-high 66.7% when driving, though. source

Can he get to the free throw line? Augustin only went to the roughly twice (1.9 FTA) per 36 minutes played post all-star break, but when he did, he was effective, shooting the second best percentage on the team (86.1%) only behind Anthony Morrow (90.9%). source

Can he rebound? At 6'0 tall, 180 lbs heavy, Augustin isn't much of a rebounder. It's just not his game. Augustin averaged 3.2 REB per 36 minutes only besting Steve Novak (2.5 REB/36 MIN). Honestly, I'm not worried about our back up point-guard rebounding the ball well. see above source

Defense

Augustin allowed his man to shoot 42.4% from the field last season. He only gave up 33% shooting from beyond the arc, but when defending opponents closer to the goal (inside 10ft), he allowed his man to shoot 52.6%. Given his height, this isn't hard to swallow, but one needs to be careful when asking Augustin to switch on guys who like to post-up. He has never been known for his ability to rip the ball as he is just an average size defender at point averaging a measley .9 steals per 36 minutes. His DBPM (defensive box plus minus) leaves way more to be desired, coming in at a -2.7.

Misc. Notes

Shot 47.8% on corner 3PA last year with OKC.
Shot 42.1% on catch-and-shoot 3PA last year with OKC.
Shot 27.8% on pull-up 3PA last year with OKC.
FG% at the rim was remarkably almost 60% (.599)
