Official #1 pick thread: Simmons or Ingram? Merging topics and a Poll

Post#1 » by Agnostifarian » Mon Jan 11, 2016 7:16 pm

Simmons looks like the perfect prospect (except for the jump shot) and the favorite to be the first pick in the 2016 Draft. Brandon Ingram looks like the perfect prospect (except for being skinny) and he may also be considered by the team picking first. If Hinkie were still in charge, I suspect he might prefer Ingram for the all around game and elite length. Sam likes rim protection and steals. He also loves players with a jump shot or else Canaan and Thompson would have been gone already. I think Ingram has a better chance of improving his strength than Simmons has of improving his jump shot. I'll take Ingram. Philly could use a SG/SF that is a top 5 player in the NBA. That would be a nice fit with our big men. It is also a hedge on happiness in case we don't get the first pick.

I would like to add a poll; Simmons or Ingram?

Edit:
Poll reset post lottery. At time of reset:
Simmons 42 40%
Ingram 64 60%

x looks like the perfect prospect except for y. How can x be perfect if y is a weakness?

anyways i pick simmons easily. imagine an offense where you have a starter point forward (simmons) and a point forward off the bench (saric)

I dont see superstar potential in ingram. He doesnt have the high BBIQ that simmons and saric possess which are the players we need.

Okafor has high BBIQ

Saric has high BBIQ

Simmons has high BBIQ

Embiid is a freak of nature and his BBIQ is also pretty good

You want to become the spurs? You need high BBIQ players

Looking at the question that is the header for this post, my answer would be yes, Simmons or Ingram for Philly, in that order, thanks :D

Simmons, and I'm sending Okafor out for a proven player in this scenario. The rotation of Noel, Embiid (hopefully), Saric and sometimes Simmons at the 4 would be insane. I would mainly play Simmons at the 3 assuming he can guard other 3s.

Simmons by a landslide. How can this even be a discussion? Simmons is the best prospect since LeBron. Come on people. Don't overthink this. Good thing I trust Hinkie and know he won't screw it up if we get the top pick.

You're crazy if you think keeping NoMovesorHands Noel instead of Okafor is a great idea. Noel stinks and will stink even more at a cost of $16 million a yr.

The guy doesn't even bring his A-game on defense every night and forget about offense...

You can disagree but this is how I feel. He does everything. Exceptional except shooting. How many prospects could you say that about? Not many. LeBron had the same flaws. Only shooting was his flaw. Durant had his flaws. Griffin cousins shoot. Davis had his flaws. Embiid is as close to the perfect prospect coming out but I give the edge to Simmons because he is a better passer.

Simmons is an elite passer.
Simmons is an elite leader.
Simmons is an elite rebounder.
Simmons is a very good dribbler for his size.
Simmons is a very good driver.
Simmons gets teammates involved just like LeBron.
Simmons facilitates the offense like he's the PG.

Simmons just can't shoot. Not good but he's still the top prospect by a landslide.

What's essentially a better version of Lamar Odom is the best prospect since Lebron? Hmm...

If we have the first pick we take Simmons without thinking twice. There is a reason why he's so hyped and constantly being compared to the likes of Magic and LeBron. Sure he has his weaknesses but then again so did those guys when they entered the NBA.

IMO he's a once in a generation talent that you simply can't pass up whether he fits into your current roster or not. You build your team around him not the other way around.

I'm not saying that Ingram can't be a great player in his own right and I'd still be happy if we ended up with the second pick and took him but he isn't on the same level as Simmons.

Simmons is the best prospect like Lebron since Lebron, I'll say that, but I won't rank him over Durant or AD at this point. Not only do we not know how well he will ever shoot, we really don't have enough evidence on what kind of a defender he is going to be. Lebron could not only play offense from 1-5, he could play D there too, which is what makes him the greatest player since MJ.

Hard to rank Embiid in there, he really didn't play enough of a primary role in college to put him in that rarified air. Physically and on pure potential is realizes Embiid is in that class, but he wasn't productive enough in college to list him with AD and Durant. Simmons might be listed with them, but not above them.

I just want to get a top two pick and grab Lebron-lite or Durant-lite this year, not third or lower, dangit!!!

IMO a better Odom is Simmons's floor (which in itself is a pretty damn good scenario) while Durant is Ingram's ceiling. It isn't fair to assume worst case scenario for one while assuming best-case scenario for the other. If we assume that Simmons is the next Odom by that logic we also have to assume that Ingram is the next Anthony Randolph.

As a freshman college player, Simmons is better, without a doubt. The question is how does that project down the road?

The matching with other players would affect the speed it takes for Simmons to show well. The perfect scenario as I see it is to draft Simmons if you can, and get a lightning quick two guard, who can be undersized, and who has a fine outside shot and is quick enough to defend the opponent's point guard. Then you have a future deadly backcourt and Simmons can play mainly point, and ocassional three and four . Magic-esque without that level of passing skill but still high.

Of course you then need to add a great scoring three, an absolute must. SF's are out there and 6'9 point guards are not. Simmons plays a kind of hybrid point guard now, driving to the hoop and using his height to help him score close to the basket or dish to an open shooter.
He is a good scorer under these circumstances, but not a jump shooter from what I have seen. So he is not a stretch four by modern NBA standards at this stage of development, and certainly not an inside four. If you made Simmons a point SF, two much much better scoring/shooting guards are needed. An alternative. NBA teams need about 3.5 shooter/scorers on the floor to have great success, but Simmons can score without a typical jump shot so he is the .5 who can score

If you get Ingram, who I have seen less , you are building more conservatively and traditionally. You still need at least one killer scorer in the backcourt, and have to figure out the Embid/Okafor/Noel quagmire at the bigs. Saric and Holmes might figure as well.
It's a result of drafting the "best injured player available" and a horribly unbalanced situation exists.

If they slip in the lottery, Buddy Hield would fit very well.

I'm glad they are playing Stauskas some despite very modest production. He may be able to gain confidence and be the two guard they need if they draft Ingram or Simmons. None of the other shooting guards are worth talking about for much playing time on a good team.Free agency would help here.
