Scott wastes talent because he thinks he's entitled to Hall of Famers at every position. Ed Davis and Jeremy Lin should still be Lakers, they were affordable quality rotation players and veterans who haven't even hit their prime years yet. Tarik Black has proven value: he rebounds and picks up points off hustle. His lack of height and lack of a complete game may preclude a starting frontcourt position, but he can still be a great hustle guy off the bench. He doesn't need to be Faried or Rodman. He just needs to be a consistent role player.
He can also have value in small ball lineups, he clearly has the athleticism to get up and down the floor. He can be an asset this way.
His game could also grow. He's young enough and still raw. He doesn't need to become an entirely different player and shoot threes. But he could grow in terms of knowing the game better; he can be a better passer, find his spots, draw fouls, learn defensive rotations, draw charges, etc. But he can't grow if he's not given an opportunity, with the right teammates, the right system, and the right coach.
Right now, Byron Scott is running garbage sets that degenerate into selfish play. It takes unselfish players with exceptional off-the-ball skills to play with Kobe, Lou, Nick, Clarkson, Randle, etc. right now. So far, it's Nance and Bass, but not everybody can be a Nance and Bass. Some players need to grow into that position. Black is one of those.
Black, like Kelly, will become quality role players on some team. Too bad it won't be ours, because our coach, from the beginning, does not know how to bring the best out of his players, which is one of the basic requirements of a coach. He does the opposite...he stunts them, he belittles them, then plays the victim - still can't fathom how an NBA coach said his own players would shoot him in the back. There's only one guy around here who's shooting people down.
